Buckle up folks, because I have a fish story for you. ____ Typically when exploring new water, I go in with very low expectations. I by no means am a professional angler, and I fully admit and understand that I have a lot still left to learn. So when fishing a new place, I like to go into it thinking that I may not catch anything, but it is a great way to learn more about different fisheries. ____ Walking along the trail, rods in hand, I spot a clearing. My flies haven’t touched the water yet, and I haven’t even had a chance to turn over any rocks, and rig up. But under the covering of the trees, along the bank, I see a trout rise. ____ At this point, I figure it doesn’t hurt to toss my 3 weight in there, already rigged up with a dry. First cast, second cast, third cast, BOOM! The fish smashes my dropper. I realize soon that maybe a 3 weight wasn’t the best idea. ____ In my mind, every expert angler I have ever been on the water with is ringing through my head. “Apply side pressure, keep your rod tip up, walk backwards.” Soon enough however; that dreaded “pop” flings my flies into the air, and the fish is off. ____ The drama queen in me collapses onto the bank in full diva fashion, only to get up, and find he has returned. ____ Cautiously, I head back to the water, and start casting to him again. Second cast, and he’s hooked up again, this time my reel is screaming as he makes a dash downstream, takes me under a rock, and into the abyss he swims. ____ One time to get redemption is lucky, but for that to happen twice? No way! But low and behold, old Houdini returns about 5 minutes later. ____ This time, the determination is unmatched. There is no way I won’t land him this time. Cast. Cast. Cast.
