So we went up to Horse Creek on a lead from the Pinedale Game and Fish office. It was hot... Really hot. With the warmth came the mosquitos. They about carried us away they were so thick. Pretty country I tell ya. We saw a few moose, and were chased by some mule deer. The water was ripping. I followed it quite a way up, and instead of the water clearing.. It just became more choked with sediment. From black to white and all colors in between, I threw it all at them. The previous 3 species had all eaten streamers so I was adamant on keeping the trend. I just couldn't get it to work... No mojo. We pulled out to hunt a new watershed. Cottonwood Creek was equally a mess. We tried our best, but in the end all we had were a couple good meals. I was running out of water... The original plan was to fish La Barge, but that road washout kept us from getting over the pass. I called Wyoming Game and Fish biologists in the Cody office looking for clear water. They'd pointed me to an absolute gem up in Shoshone. I called back to say thanks, and seek direction on SRC's. After two nights camping and searching where they sent me I had to bail because water was cresting near flood stage. It was Saturday morning and I was stuck with most govt offices closed. I dropped down to Jackson looking for a fly shop. (Surprised no one I found working for NPS in Grand Teton fly fishes). I've told you culture shock is a real deal for us... Well if you leave the grandeur of the Tetons, and drive into the overpriced circus that is Jackson, WY I promise you will understand. The first fly shop I found was the Orvis store. I went in finding my typical Orvis experience... I'm sure there are great Orvis stores out there, and I'm sure the camp smoke, 5 day grease, and dirty hands didn't help.. But no one would help me. A customer shopping there tried to give direction, but it was a lot of doom and gloom. I guess you need to wear flannel shirts, tight pants, and taupe vests to get good Intel in that shop. I drove around a bit longer unwilling to accept hard news. I stumbled into @snakeriverangler amidst a swarm of tourists fighting over antlers. The shop was busy, clean, and the tying section was absolutely gorgeous. Immediately a young shop hand came up and talked fish with me. He said hold up until the seasoned veteran gets free and let's see what he says. Old boy comes up smiles and handshakes. We start brainstorming. The man really likes the Gila vibe I brought up North and wants to help. He points me to a trib of the Hoback. Said the water will be clear with a lot of SRC's, but nothing donkey like. I said it's about the journey brother... Show me the Shetland's! Off we went... Stunning up there folks. Those cats were right. Plenty of good firewood, the primitive established sites were fantastic, waterfalls, and a nice hot spring mineral pool at the top to soak in. Everybody in our party of 3.5 was stoked! The fishing... Back to complete shit. Dave didn't show Wednesday. I hit a low.. Low low. Probably because the fishing went super hot in between, and I'd used up all of my morale boosting provisions in between. I burned the last of my wood Thursday morning. The mead was gone. No smokes. Bacon was gone. Dog gone. Wife gone, and not expected for days. No truck. And then this beautiful bastard shows up. Dude rolls up in the granola burning subi. Headphones on and WA plates. Lines up a 2 hander and wades up above my camp. I haven't talked to anyone in days, dude cracks a Coors and then lights up a chun-lee. Boom...
