Honestly I don’t think Mai would ever date Aang because her standards and boundaries are stronger than that. Aang would probably go crawling back to someone like Meng who would stroke his ego constantly and tell him how special he is

We have wildly different views of Mai. I don't think they would stay together, but I could see Mai being bored enough to date Aang for a while. Especially if he had enough money to buy her things and she could get special treatment as the Avatar's Girlfriend. I could see Aang being intimidated enough by her to at least keep his flirtations with his fans at least discrete. Mai would probably not stroke his ego the way his fans do, or coddle him the way Katara did, but I think she would encourage the selfish, short-sighted part of him in a way that would make him feel like he was actually making grown up decisions for himself, when in reality, he's just being manipulated by Mai's subtle digs about his maturity and manhood, and being a flashy show off to prove a point.

Let me be perfectly clear here. They would not be good together. At all. But they would be interesting while they lasted at least. They are a reality show couple waiting to happen.

I havent watched atla but i love hearing sum hot takes

I don't know how hot my takes are, seeing how many people actually agree with me, but here's a few of my spiciest takes:

Aang and his relationship with Katara turned out exactly like I expected it would. Bumi and Kya's neglect, and Tenzin's trauma included.

Aang is more like Ozai than Zuko is at any point in canon. If it had been intentional, it would've been brilliant!

If any couple would have married just weeks after meeting and stayed married forever, it would have been Katara and Zuko. They would've been the Crofts of the ATLA universe (that's a reference to Jane Austen's Persuasion). That is why I think that when Katara told Aang she was "confused" in EIP, she was really turning him down in the nicest way she could.

I understand why Taang is a thing, but Toph deserved better than Aang. Just because she would've been good for him doesn't mean he would've been good for her. And every argument for Taang I've personally seen has been about how good she would've been for Aang.

Aang didn't teach Katara how to be a kid. He did whatever he thought was fun, and if Katara joined in, fine. He didn't actually care if she was having fun.

Calling the first 2 Kataang kisses sexual assault is not overstating things. Just because Aang the character was 12 doesn't absolve him. His creators were grown men who should've known better.

I don't ship Aang with anyone because the character that he was written as was waaaaaaay too selfish to be a good partner for anyone. I have made no secret of my hatred of Kataang, and I just told you why I hate Taang, but I also hate Zukaang. Specifically because of how Aang approached the problem of Ozai. Zuko deserves better than a more cheerful version of Mai.

Speaking of Aang's comparability to Mai, I think they would make an interesting couple. Not a happy one, but an interesting one.

Bonus: I call the Aang/Mai ship Flying Dagger. I need Flying Dagger to be a thing. I don't even care if people use the ship name in happy Mai/Aang stories.

Aang and Mai would definitely get together to try and "make Katara and Zuko jealous" and it would MISERABLYYY fail

That is absolutely one scenario I've considered. I like the idea that they are met with support by both Katara and Zuko- who are too deliriously happy to consider that Aang and Mai getting together has anything to do with them. It pisses them off, especially Mai, but stay together out of spite because the rest of their friends don't think they'll last.

My favorite scenario, though, is that they get together because they have nothing better to do. Mai likes the idea of dating the Avatar, just like she liked the idea of dating royalty. Aang likes being with Mai because her apathy and her love of letting him spend money on her gives him an illusion of control. Katara was big on keeping him on track with his responsibilities- like any good mother would be- and being with Mai makes him feel like a man. At least for a while.

Some Aang supporters just need to see the potential of Flying Dagger.

Y EEEEESSSSS! Aang and Mai stand need to embrace Flying Dagger. They make sense (at least temporarily). Imagine all the horrific adventures they could have together. Aang with a woman who has Katara's ruthlessness, but none of her compunction? Mai with a powerful man who she could manipulate through his ego? Who cares if they could actually last as a couple long term. The stories that could be told!

i’ve never thought of aang and mai as a ship and tbh my head still can’t wrap around it but the ship name flying dagger is so cool i think the ship needs to be much more popular simply bc of that lol, and also aang and mai being toxic together 🫶

It is an awesome ship name. I am very proud of it 😊 I'd be happy to see it used, even if they were being shipped together sincerely. To be clear, though, I don't think they would last, but we all know a couple that got together and no one can explain why. Sometimes they're actually cute together, but most times it's just a mess.

I keep thinking about a cheating Flying Dagger.....

Zuko breaks up with Mai/Katara breaks up with Aang and so here is Aang now living with Mai and he's now realizing how much Katara actually did

Mai hates cleaning, cooking, and would rather spend the $$ to pay a maid, would rather eat out at expensive places and so on... Aang now has to really be responsible for things he never really gave a second thought towards

He really misses Katara, his friends are obviously pissed at him. He probably only knows what's going on in Katara's life thanks to friends of friends/social media and learns shes now with Zuko
