Amongst the London crowds, Christine and Elle clung to each other as they attempted to follow their mother through a sea of strangers. Though typically on market days, the sea of faces had quickly swallowed their mother’s elegant form, and the pair were left helplessly looking around for a glimpse of the feather protruding from her hat, or the delicate weavings of lace that flourished her parasol. How she passed so simply through these crowds was a mystery to both girls, though it was a skill they both hoped to master one day.
Exchanging a look of despair, the young ladies released a sigh, then continued trying to push through the crowd; less care being taken this time to note who they were attempting to push in order to create a path for themselves. Elle knew from experience being left alone in public was a dangerous act, especially for the daughters of a wealthy man. So in short, fear had begun to sprout in the hearts of both girls, and it was not long before fear would blossom into sheer panic.
