FMA 03 Month Day 1 Favourite Male Character/Least Favourite Male Character
Well, this is gonna be interesting.
I think it’s pretty obvious who my pick for favourite male character in this series is, so so keep things interesting we’re gonna do something different.
I’m gonna talk about my favourite character and also talk about another male character in this show I also love, too. That way, it won’t just be me being painfully predictable.
So here go!
Favourite Male Character: Colonel Roy Mustang
Yes, if you’ve ever followed my personal blog you’ll know I love this broken son of a bitch!
I’ve been very subtle about it, but trust me it’s there.
But seeing this post actually made me realize something; I’ve never actually taken the time to explain why I like him so much. I’ve gushed in the past, but an explanation is something I’ve never written.
So I figured here might be the perfect time to do so.
There’s the obvious for me;
He’s a blunt, smarmy bastard.
He’s deliciously evil and capable of playing even the most intelligent people like a fiddle.
He’s actually smart and knows how to use people’s weaknesses.
His confidence and arrogant demeanour.
There’s also the fact that despite being stoic, it’s always fun when he’s the butt of the joke. He’s adorable when he allows himself to let loose, and grumpy/irritable Mustang is my aesthetic.
But if I really had to summarize my main reason for loving this character so much, it’d have to be because of that big heart he has underneath.
Here is a man who has committed war crimes that include torching innocent people to death and executing doctors who were on “his side”. He lives in a system that props him up as war hero, ensures he will never be held accountable for his actions during war time, and it’s left him a broken, bitter mess who is thoroughly disgusted with himself. To the point where trying to commit mass Human Transmutation to bring back the everyone he murdered sounds like a good idea.
He could’ve easily asked to be discharged after Ishbal...but doesn’t go that path. He wants so desperately to atone for what he’s done he sets his sights on getting to the Top. He chooses to be better, because the only other option he has is to opt out, and he doesn’t even have the guts to do that.
Now in doing so he makes a lot of mistakes, but I love that! I love that he keeps Ed in the dark about stuff he oughta know about, because he’s thinking of his feelings. I love that he’s not above resorting to dirty tricks to get what he wants, up to and including putting his loved ones in danger. Hell, I love the fact that he is a cruel jackass, intentionally or no.
But then I see those moments where he mourns over the loss of his friend, chooses to open up to someone who means the world to him, risk his life to not only hide two children from the Government, but to eventually tear down the system he was so willingly complacent in, and I think “Oh yeah. That’s why I like this character; he has a heart.”
Also;
My other favourite is defenitely Jean Havoc.
Alright, I admit this one’s mostly because he’s just such a butt monkey, and Mike MacFarland pathetically screaming his head off is always hilarious to me. But I also love what a loyal, confident guy he is.
Also, I just really like the odd friendship he has with Roy...Roy stealing his girlfriends and crushes not withstanding (depending on how you read the cold open for the team Mustang episode).
