“I guess it depends how you define ‘aware’. Back in grade school and middle school my friends— if you could call them friends— had crushes on boys but I never liked anyone. At the beginning of high school it kinda clicked for me when I realized getting crushes on girls wasn’t just something every other girl did. It wasn’t what I was supposed to do, but I never followed all the rules anyway. So I just accepted that this was who I was.”

24. how do you feel about the term “queer” ?

“I’ve got some mixed feelings about it. People have used it against me like it’s something to be ashamed of. I think reclaiming it and taking the power back is an okay idea, but I’d rather people just call me lesbian or gay.”
