Borneo International Marathon (1/5/2016)
Being one week after Langkawi FM, I wasn't thinking too much about setting a target for BIM 2016 FM, even entertained the idea of pacing someone to sub4, though just briefly 😆, not to mention I'd be climbing Mt Kinabalu the next day. But in the end I decided to try to run sub3:40hrs again, the same target as Langkawi.
Sub3:40 doesn't sound as catchy as sub3:30 but that's the achievable timing for me 😂. I do still want to maintain a certain standard for all my marathons, especially knowing that my idol Yuki Kawauchi is able to race week after week and maintain a supremely high standard; as far away as I am from him, I do want to try to emulate that 😆😂.
3:30h seems to be a tough nut to crack locally, the closest I got was 3:32 in Kuching Marathon last August and I fared worse since then. Being 43min 10k level here recently means local sub3:30h should be doable yet it's been beyond reach thus far, including this time. My local FM level seems to be hovering around 3:3x.
Haven't been following my original schedule, just did an easy run on Tuesday and joined Puma staircase training on Wednesday which was tiring as hell, then rested the rest of the week coming into this marathon. Did the usual carbo-loading the days before.
BIM FM route is mostly flat except for the middle part between 18-24km at UMS which has two long and steep inclines. I liked the atmosphere in Likas Stadium before the start, many runners arrived early and the organiser had people leading a warm-up dance, it was electrifying.
Race
3am was the start time. Started together with Alan Tan and Tang Yew Choy but fell back shortly after, I was running 4:40 pace the first 2km yet they went faster, and soon was out of sight. I didn't follow as even at that pace I was feeling quite tired.
I hovered around 4:50-5min pace the first 15km, while it's faster than 3:40h pace I thought I'd just go at that pace and see if I could sustain it later, also partly because Michael Wong and Kai Liang sayured me early on and that was surprising as I didn't expect them to run so fast, so was trying to hang on to them lol.
Hit 21km at 1:42:03 after the first major incline at 19km. Began fading after the second incline at 23km and started stopping at water stations. Reached the U-turn which was supposed to be 30km but was only 29.6km on my watch, hit 30km at 2:30:52. Along the way counted the runners ahead and knew I had no chance of podium. Saw friends including Pan, Jerry and Kartini after the U-turn and cheered each other.
Last 12km was the usual struggle in FM, struggling to maintain pace (was hovering around 5:30-6:10) and watching the average pace on my watch slowly slipping away.
In the end crossed the finish line at 3:36:16 with a GPS distance logged of 41.83km, was surprised at the short distance because this was supposed to be AIMS certified and one would typically run longer than 42.195km. Emailed the organiser and AIMS and they claimed it should be accurate, hmm… I suspect it was indeed under distance because the route was almost exactly the same as last year except for the U-turn point which was about 400m earlier, making it 800m shorter than last year.
My splits as below: 10km - 47:50 20km - 1:37:04 (2nd 10km - 49:14) 30km - 2:30:52 (3rd 10km - 53:48) 40km - 3:26:40 (4th 10km - 55:48) 41.83km - 3:36:16 (1.83km - 9:36)

Average pace was 5:10min/km so hit below 5:13 (3:40hrs) pace, not bad. Didn't cramp during the marathon but cramped after 😅. Impressed with Alan Tan as he did it in 3:31hrs, he’s faster than me now, man I gotta buck up.
One thing to note was I took two assam with me, following the theory that it’s the nerves that cause cramp and eating assam calms the nerves, however I forgot to bring a plastic bag and dropped one of the assam 😓, so I put the other one in my pocket and halfway through my sweat basically melted the sugar layer, in the end I did eat it I think at the halfway mark, no I don’t know if it mattered in preventing cramp, guess not since I still cramped after 😅.
