Inspiration for my ripped Bethan surreal portraits, I found these images on Pinterest and added them to my FMP board (https://www.pinterest.co.uk/zachknott1/fmp-surrealism/) . I like these images as they incorporate multiple images in to one and create a new narrative.  Personally I feel as though by making an image out of more than one photo suggest the subject has layers and multiple feelings/personalities. This is an intriguing concept for the audience as it makes them naturally curious, creating an enaging image.

Activism & Protest Research

There’s been a few exhibitions & talks I’ve been to in the last year I’ve been to which has really influenced me and made me think about expression of rights in a bigger context, especially outside of the outspoken western society.

Jesiah Atkinson, inspiration for photo edits. I like the relation between the models clothing and the colours used in the edit, tying the image together. The isolation of the subject and depositing them on to a solid colour background is something that I will take inspiration from for use within my final exhibition pieces.

Surreal portraits by an unknown artist. The distortion of the face is very effective in creating a surreal image, the face is something that is very common to us so seeing it warped, compartmentalised and coloured is very striking as we are seeing something that is so normal to use drastically changed. The use of colour to create surrealism is something that I have repeatedly experimented with throughout this project.

Mixed media surreal portraiture by an unknown artist. I think the layering of the paint on top of the photograph is very effective and adds another dimension to the image. By isolating the subjects face, and also by covering some of their face, creates a disassociation and removes the ability to properly connect and relate to subject. This, as well as the mixed media, adds to the surrealism of the image.

Gifs by an unknown artist. The artist has heavily distorted these images in terms of pattern and colour, creating ‘strangely familiar’ images that we can identify as something we know and are familiar with by are at the same time very different to anything we see. The flickering and moving of the gif further adds to the surrealism as it makes the images look ‘alive’.
