My work experience booklet. For my work experience I wanted to experience what it would be like to be a self employed photographer. So I set about contacted local business and asking if they would like any photos taken for their business. I heard back from TomatoJack Arts in Berkeley and The Equine Eye Clinic in Wotton-Under-Edge. Both companies were pleased with the work I produced for them and ended up paying me for my services. From his experience I feel as though I have gained some understanding on how to be a self employed photographer by; working to deadline, meeting a clients brief, working on your own in new environments, planning ahead for a shoot and bringing all of the necessary equipment and presenting myself in a professional manner.

These are my final images, printed and mounted on foam board ready to be put up on the wall for the end of porject exhibition. I chose for them to be printed this size to ensure that the audience could easily see all three images at the same time, which is neccessary because they all connect together.

‘Sharpness Docks’ DSLR shoot evaluation:

I am happy with the outcome of this photoshoot. I chose early evening to catch the sunset which produced some nicely coloured images, which added to the surreal effect as the sky is not usually that colour. 

I produced a wide variety of images and had a lot of material to create edits from. The mirrored surreal edits I produced worked effectively on this shoot becaise the images consist of a lot of geometric lines which compliment the mirroring effect.

‘Sam’ 120mm masks shoot evaluation:

My outcome from shooting on 120mm film at this location was not as good as I had hoped for. My original intention was to use my images from the Yashica Mat medium format camera for my final piece and have the DSLR images as a back up. Unfortunatley the majority of the images I took on this shoot are out of focus and not good enough to use for my final piece. 

This is something that I have struggled with before when shooting on medium format cameras. I think this may be because I struggle to focus the lens fully when looking through the viewfinder, due to external light making it difficult to see properly. To resolve this I intent to shoot as a wider depth of field in the future so that I have more margain for error with my focusing, and also maybe invest in a dark hood so that I can block out any external light entering the view finder. 

Luckily this shoot is not lost as I also shot on my DSLR camera incase of this very outcome. This is something that I will continue to do when shooting on film in the future as the outcomes aren’t always as reliable as a digital camera.

These are my edited pictures from the grafitti mask photoshoot in Stroud with model Sam, and are also my final pieces for this project. 

When creating these images I took in to consideration the fact that they were going to be printed and exhibited. From this I came up with the idea of somehow connecting all three images together - to do this I hace created a band that goes across all three images and connect to one another. I feel as though this makes my images good installation pieces as they work as one and they lead through to one another making them all just as relevant. 

The block colour in these images was sampled from the colour of each of the masks, tying the image in with the model and making it cohesive. 

A theme that has been consistent throughout my porject has been disembodiment through photo-editing so this is something I have repeated here. To do this I cut out the model from his surrounding and layered hin over the bands of colour, half-seperating him from the image to create a surreal look. 

I feel as though these images are successful as they show that I have considered and had in mind my outcome from the start of this shoot rhough to the final outcome: the masks (symbolising disembodiment and lack of identity) matching the graffit and the subsequent blocks of colour matching both of these things.

Contact sheets from my final piece shoot with model Sam. This shoot was about in-camera surrealism. I made four masks and spray painted them with enamel paint with a colour that matched a specific spot of graffiti, tying the model and the mask in with the environment. 

I created so many contact sheets so that I could make a well thought out decision about which images would work best for my final piece. From these contact sheet I then narrowed it down to my favourite few.

My favourite edited pictures from this location in Cheltenham. I chose this location for the bold and colourful grafitti which makes the images really striking and draws the attention of the viewer.

Edited shoe pictures. My focus for these images was to get the contrast of the shoes and the grass, I used depth of field to make some of the fore-ground grass and flowers out of focus so I could keeop the attention on the shoes. I may use these photos in a series of 2 or 3 images with similar surreal edits.

Some edited images from my shoot with model Alex in Cheltenham. This location was a gazebo in a park; when composing these pictures I used the symmetry of the steps and railings to create lead lines which draw in the eye of the viewer. I like my use of levels and the perspectives I have used. For the lsat image I used a wide 10mm lens up close to the model to create a warped our of perspective effect, this is something that I will utilise when producing my surreal images.

Some of my favourite edited pictures from my photoshoot down at the Sharpness docks. I went in the early evening so that I could catch the sunset, which created beautiful colours in the sky and was am aesthetically pleasing contrast between the dark/silhouetted shapes of the old cranes.
