This first set of pictures under 'never ending stories' is The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It has started off as a musical which has then been adapted into a film and then been 'spoofed' by fellow television shows, in this case, Glee. It has then went further to be brought back in cartoon shown in the Bearman cartoons and Batman.
My second set for From Broadcast to Social Media.
The first image is a very simple illustration of the competition between traditional news media and the twitter news tweets. Because Twitter can provide instantaneous updates on news, with multiple perspectives - something broadcast media can't compete with. The second image is a political cartoon but it serves the purpose of defining the role of the Broadcast media as one-to-anyone. There is a target audience, but a vague one, ill-defined.
The third marks the evolution of broadcast media. From printing press to digital replication, traditional broadcasting has evolved to include 24 hour updates, sharing/highlighting stories, and a whole host of apps.
The fourth, is an example to one to one, or few communication. I thought the image of the poke added a nice contrast from the other forms of communication, in that it's very direct and specialised.
The fifth and sixth relate to the consequences of this new system. As we share and upload, comment and review, we are increasingly visible. Privacy settings can only go so far in protecting you as something your friends share is then subject to their settings. But it's not your friends that are the only things to worry about it. Companies can see you. Organisations can see you. Can study you. Can learn you.
Time, Space and Digital Media. A collection of pictures demonstrating some aspects of this topic. The first picture relates to the concept of space being altered in gaming. New worlds are create that players must learn, navigate and master. These places have little bearing on the laws or existence of reality but can be termed as alternate 'worlds.' The second picture relates to the concept of time and in particular digital babies. We've discussed the notion of time and how even unborn babies have a digital presence, I think this photo illuminates the idea that digital natives are getting younger and younger.
The third is to do with convergent media. It demonstrates the cycle that technology is going through, drawing inexorably towards a centre of convergent media products.
The fourth, a google search query which is being put through the Google Instant process. This simply demonstrates a feature over which there is much debate - the notion of control. This feature makes things faster, but we are presented with search queries we haven't finished asking for, and so we lose the ability to choose what we want.
Next, is the photo of President Obama receiving the new that Osama Bin Laden is dead. The significance of this is that it is an example of convergent media. This photo emerged just after he'd given confirmation, with satisfaction, that Bin Laden was dead, and paints a slightly different picture. It demonstrates how convergent media provides us with so many different angles with which to view news stories.
Finally, The movie database on a windows computer. I found this an apt description of TV as a 'lending library.' That people can store dozens or hundreds of films on their computers without even having to go online. Once they do however, and even wider, more vast world is revealed.
Set 1: Never Ending Stories
GIFs, to me, represent a way that people are using the internet to express and create their own meanings from the media and pop culture they consume and interact with.
It may be frivolous but by using these snapshots of other media in their own interactions and creations, individuals take ownership of the media that they consume by recontextualising it and giving it new meaning.
They use pop culture references in new ways to describe their own feelings and therefore take ownership of their own understanding of that particular piece of media to create their own interpretations that can then influence others.
