Miata Upgrade: Foamectomy
Mileage: 83,900
I once drove a Lotus Elise for a day. That experience changed my life.
There is something about sitting low in a car meant for driving that is so perfect. The Elise was about as low and connected as you could get (as far as seating positions go). The stock Miata seating positing makes me wonder if I am driving a car meant for enjoyment or a 1997 Ford Explorer. The seats are far too padded, under bolstered, and have you sit waaaaaay too far off the floor. Eventually I want to get racing buckets (or even Elise seats), but my money is going toward making the Miata reliable right now.
What free solution is there to this problem? Cut foam out of the stock seats. This is commonly referred to as the "foamectomy" on many Miata forums and is quite popular. I had some free time so I bit the bullet, ripped the driver's seat apart, and hacked away with a sharp knife. The results are great and I would recommend this to anyone wanting a better seat but don't want to part with hundreds of dollars.
