Today where I live a storm is blowing in. It’s a long-awaited rainstorm, the first of the season and hopefully the first of many to bring water to the area. So it’s a good thing, but storms also bring danger: flooding, high winds, debris blowing all over the place. It’s important to be careful and pay attention when moving through a storm. And that’s a good metaphor for today as well. Seas are up, the wind is blowing, and if our sails are tacked to the wind we can take advantage of the energy to move ourselves forward with little of our own energy spent. But we have to focus and pay attention to what we’re doing and even more critically perhaps we have to watch the environment around us to see what’s happening. If the wind becomes too strong, it could destroy our sails and pull our boat apart. We have to know when to cut the lines and bring the sails down. And not to push the nautical metaphor too far, but we need to watch the skies and know when to change direction and turn back, or turn away into a new current. See are responsible for our journey, and we’re responsible for getting ourselves from place to place. Nobody else is. Nobody else is going to stand up at the end of our lives and take credit or blame for our choices. It’s all on us.
