That day after class Mr. Hauton asked me to stay for a moment to talk to him, which is a little odd, I honestly felt like he could have left things where they where, like why ask me to stay after you have already made your point, or attempted anyway. As soon as the last student left Mr. Hauton asked me to take a seat in one of the desk across from his. "Ms. Riley, I know that you have impeccable listening skills, and the grades to show it, but I must ask that you please hold your attention towards me, afterall you are the head of the class as far as grades go, so I feel like it would be best for the other students to see you working and clearly paying attention." He said calmly "I need you to set an example."
Honestly that kind of pissed me off, "how are you going to ask me to take a leadership role amongst my classmates" , I said to myself I didn't ask to be the smart one, and I damn sure didn't want to be the head of the class. I let out a deep breath, "okay, I can do that, I guess."
Mr. Hauton looked at the ground then up at me again " also I would like to ask for your help." He said reaching in his desk, can you read this to me? He asked while pulling out an old leather back book that had been tattered and torn, the pages where almost the color of heavily creamed coffee. He opened the book to a page in the middle and handed it to me holding it with both hands, as to not tear the book anymore than it already was.
I looked at the page and in the top right corner was a snake, and the bottom left was an oak tree, in the center was only one word Flazeda, I read it not sure if I was reading it properly, but Mr. Hauton assured me I was right with a bearly seeable smile on his face, to be fare more of a smile than I had ever seen him show. I asked why he had me read that, and he said in time I would see, then sent me on my way home, the whole walk, I asked why was he acting so strange, and what was that book.
