Foggypaw (Foggypelt) gets a wake-up-call
Foggypaw had her head held high all morning. She was saddened by the death of Buzzardstar, of course, but she was delighted by the fact that she was now officially the Leader’s apprentice. She bounded over to the other apprentices as they shared tongues, wiggling with excitement.
“Don’t worry, guys,” she said with smugness creeping into her voice, “even though Crowfa-, oh Crowstar, I mean- is my mentor, I’ll still talk to you.” She gave her paw a swift lick, missing the glances exchanged to the other cats. “Nothing has changed really. I just assume I’ll have some more dramatic and interesting training now. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.”
The other cats mumbled out a few congratulations. “Oh, yeah that must be exciting…” “Wow, the leader will train you.” “Glad it isn’t going to your head…”
Foggypaw purred and began to slink away. “I’m going to go have a chat with Crowstar to see how he wants to train me today” she said, her voice dripping with superiority. “I’m sure I’m going to be doing something super important.” It wasn’t until she was out of earshot that the other apprentices complained.
“… not even that great…” “… hope she trips on that ego….” “… rude… mouse-brained…”
Foggypaw strode straight up to the leader. He was talking to the new deputy. She didn’t notice the stressed expression on his face until she was right under his whiskers. Crowstar looked down at his apprentice and she knew she had made a mistake. She couldn’t ask him to train her now… the drought was still straining the clan, he had the stress of the whole clan on his back now. She wilted under his gaze.
“Um, Crowstar?” She mewed, “I just wanted to tell you good luck as leader, and… I wanted to say…” She glanced over her shoulder at the apprentices. They were watching her. “I wanted to say that if you need anything, I want to help, but don’t worry about me, I’ll go hunting with the others today.”
She slunk across the camp, trying to look less deflated than she was. She neared the apprentices, straightened herself up, and raised her tail.
“So, Foggypaw,” one of them said with an edge of insincerity, “what super important thing did Crowstar tell you to do?”
“I-” she looked over at Crowstar and then back to the apprentices, “Crowstar told me that I can’t tell you. It’s a secret mission, you see. It’s very important.” She put on what she hoped was a mature and serious face. “I shouldn’t even tell you THAT, but we’re friends, so I’m telling you.” She began to creep towards the camp exit. “Don’t tell anyone. I’ll be back later, after I complete my task, ok?”
She could hear them laughing at her as she entered the tunnel. She broke into a sprint, embarrassed and saddened and unsure where she was going. ‘So much for being the Leaders’ Apprentice,’ she thought. 'He’s never going to have time for me now.’
