Haribon Site Action team members Noel A. Resurreccion & Julius Tingzon revisted a growing rainforestation site in Surigao del Sur.
Eight years before, the forests of Ihawan were sparsely fragmented.
But due to the concerted efforts of the local community, especially the Ihawan Spring Stakeholders Association (ISSA) where its membership is dominated mostly of women leaders, the Tandag Water District (TWD), MLGU Tandag, BLGU Awasian, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Haribon with funding support from Isuzu Philippines, were able to restore around 5 hectares of a tropical lowland forest in Mt.Hilong-Hilong, an Important Bird area (IBA), which is also considered the last frontier of Surigao del Sur.
Today, staff were greeted by Mindanao Tarictic hornbills, White-collared kingfishers, sunbirds, and a variety of freshwater fishes and crabs in a crystal clear river in Awasian. A few decades later, these trees will become towering giants, supporting ecosystem services for everyone.
Bringing back forest does not stop at planting a tree. Much is done before and after every planting to ensure the trees will survive and grow.
Adopt-a-Seedling now and help make future forests.
