The phone shook in your hands as you heard Pepper's voice through the speaker against your ear. Your world was crashing down. What you thought was just going to be a quick mission was now heightening your heart rate. Nodding your head, you grabbed your jacket trying not to overreact.
Pepper's voice was soothing as you held your phone against your ear trying to get your shoes on. Grabbing your keys, you stormed out of your apartment dashing to your car.
"Drive carefully, please." You heard her beg from the other side. Nodding you sniffled turning the ignition and hanging up.
-
"Where is he?" you asked as you entered the compound out of breath and panicking. There was a sea of bodies waiting for you. You could only assume. You saw Pepper standing to the side, rushing to her you asked again demanding to see him.
"This way," she said calmly placing a hand on your back. You could see the other Avengers who'd been on the mission. All of them unscathed. This made your heart beat faster and your hands turn cold. You didn't know what to expect, but it wasn't Peter laying there. Motionless.
Taken aback you stumbled feeling the air knocked out of your lungs and you gasped trying to hold the tears which were quickly forming.
A side of his face was bruised and his arm was resting over his torso. Through your blurred vision, it almost looked like he was sleeping. It felt as if you could just wake him up any second now and call him over for breakfast.
"Can I?" you asked trying to get confirmation that it was okay for you to touch him. You just wanted to hold his hand. Pepper nodded and you breathed walking closer to him. The sea of bodies that had walked behind you silently cleared out and you heard Pepper softly close the door behind her.
"Hi," you said quietly gently taking Peter's hand. It was slightly cold, but there was a hint of warmness that gave you hope. Looking at him, you bit your lip hoping the tears would stop. But the knot in your throat was too painful and you just let them flow freely.
"You were supposed to come back for dinner," you said sniffling, gently squeezing his hand. You watched his unwavering face and you ran your thumb against his cheek still holding his hand.
You remembered how earlier that morning he'd planted a kiss on your head before leaving forgetting the banana you'd left for him on the counter. He'd said he'd see you later, knowing you were cooking his favorite dinner, and the door shut behind him.
The memory was painful now as you watched him not knowing if he'd wake up.
Resting your head on his chest, you sobbed quietly letting the tears smear the crisp hospital gown. Wrapping your arms around him you buried your face further expecting him to wrap his arms around you too, but he didn't.
It felt like an eternity of you resting in that position.
Until you heard a knock on the door. Looking up you saw Tony peering through the door. His hand was in the pocket of his pants and he was looking at you with the softest expression on his face.
"The doctor is coming back in to check on him," he informed and you nodded standing up wiping your tears. Slightly embarrassed that he had to see you like this.
"I'll be out of the way soon," your voice cracked and you turned to look at Peter smiling weakly.
"No rush," Tony remarked leaving.
You leaned yourself down planting a gentle kiss on Peter's lips. Your finger brushed against his eyebrows on the side of his face that wasn't bruised all the way down his arm where you held his hand once again.
Your lips grazed his forehead and you were about to give his hand one last squeeze when you felt the pressure on your hand first.
He was gripping your hand.
A swarm of warmth filled your body as you saw his lids fluttering and a soft laugh escaped your lips as the doctor opened the door. The two of you witness Peter's consciousness.
"Hi," he said with a groggy voice and you beamed kneeling down so you were at eye level.
"Hi," you hummed running your hands through his hair.
"Is dinner ready?" Peter joked and a smile spread across your face. It was going to be okay.
