I'm Late... I'm Late... Very An Important Date!
Hi Ya’ll! So I’m not late for an important date…lol…but that little verse does set the tone for my blog post in that I will be talking about Alice in Wonderland! So I adore the original Alice in Wonderland like I’m sure most of you do.. I can’t say the same about too many of the remakes that has made their way to the big screen..but I did most enjoy Tim Burton’s remake of Alice in Wonderland with…

So, we have an incredibly lovely couple who has a wedding cake on order for this weekend, and if you've been following me the past week, at least, you've probably seen me giving snippets of the figurines going up on their cake. I promised I would give step-by-step pictures... and since I completed 'em all today, I have DELIVERED! If you'd like any detailed write-ups on what's going on from picture to picture, I'd be happy to give it to you, so just hop over to my ask box if anything has you scratching your head. I have a picture of pretty much all the materials used:
Black and white food coloring (the white needs to be thickened with corn syrup), water, corn starch, smallest paint brush you can get your hands on, and a WHOLE mess of tooth picks. Process is below the cut!
Firstly, hi how are you? I truly hope you have had and will continue to have a great day! Secondly, what brand of fondant do you use and how do you prevent it from sinking on itself or getting lopsided when using mutiple colors in one sculpture? Do you use rice krispy treats as a structure or anything of the sort to keep them still? My mother makes cakes and I tend to help her with the decorations but I find fondant a bit difficult to work with.
I am doing well, thanks - hope you are, too! I'm not free to give out our fondant recipe, but if you want a good brand, try Satin Ice! I know a lot of bakeries that use it, and it holds up pretty well with figure making, as well.
I am going to put up a step-by-step how to on some figures tonight that I think should help you, but my rule of thumb is if the figure is tiny enough, like say, 5 inches or under, you shouldn't need rice crispy treat infrastructure. However, if it's a particularly BIG or blocky figure - i.e. I had to make Pixar Cars figures, once, and a 1 foot high Rapunzel tower another time - the rice crispy treat definitely helps. Try freezing a big block of it and then carving it down into the rough shape you need. The figures I posted a pic of today are all fondant, though, just for frame of reference. Shock (the witch) is the tallest, at 5 inches even.
As far as multiple colors goes, patience is key! Let it dry up a little bit first, and make all your individual parts before frankensteining them together. You can use corn syrup or just plain water to stick and smooth them together later. I hope this kinda helps as a start!
