A few pages from freshly published book of poetry by one of the most loved and celebrated Latvian poets, Imants Ziedonis- for the first time translated in English.
The purpose of the artwork in this book was to create a similar rhytm and playfullness to Ziedonis poetry, to accompany it, to continue it- like a visual interpretation, where all the visual elements ( text and illustration) work and play together throughout the book.
I used two contrasting styles of illustration for this book - one is very direct, study - like and detailed, the other - much more abstract, graphic, purely linear. Together those elements throughout the book continue to contrast and play, occasionally almost frustratingly and seemingly misplaced, just like Ziedonis poetry- his work, to my mind, is full of those contrasts and playful elements.
