INTERVIEW with WE ARE SCIENTISTS
I caught up with Keith Murray & Chris Cain of the New York indie rock band, We Are Scientists (W.A.S.), last Sunday, before their performance at FON FEST. We huddled up in their trailer aka “man cave”, parked in back of the main stage at Miami’s eco-friendly music festival, for a fun chat.
Entertainment Buzz: How do you like to describe your sound?
Chris Cain: I like to describe our sound as danceable, melodic, and positive.
Keith Murray: Yeah there’s so much negative music out there these days.
E. Buzz: And, Keith, how would you disagree with Chris’ description?
Keith M.: Funny, you should pose the question that way. I like to describe our sound as destructive, divisive, and, generally, harmful.
E. Buzz: What comes first when you compose your songs, the music or the lyrics?
Keith M.: The music definitely comes first. The lyrics come about 30 seconds before they’re recorded. Often, 30 seconds, after they’re recorded! Sometimes, I just sing random syllables, then, tell people what’s said. With, whatever homonyms come to mind.
E. Buzz: Are you really that creative, or are you just being facetious?
Keith M.: I actually do write, a lot of the time, in the moment.
Chris: Rock songs are a lot like news programs. They must be timely, or people aren't going to listen.
E. Buzz: How is playing a large outdoor venue different than an intimate club?
Chris: We were just pairing down our set list for maximum groove. When you’re outdoors, you want to groove. People in a club will tend to dance around, whether your music is driving them or not. Outdoors, they need to be spurred by your music.
E. Buzz: Where do you feel most comfortable, in the recording studio or performing live?
Chris: Literally, in the recording studio…
Keith: Yeah, the comfort level is high!
Chris: …you've got couches, and there’s no real schedule, and you can order food whenever you want to. But, we’re definitely a more of a live band. We like playing our songs and writing our songs together. That phase is fun. Probably, the least fun phase is actually laying down the track into the recorded format. That’s pretty boring awful.
