Food Porn

A friend of a friend has just mentioned elsewhere that she hates the term “food porn”.  I’ve never given it any thought, and now that I have am unbothered by it, but it has started me wondering about alternatives.

In order to qualify as porn, photos of people need to include certain elements or activities, right? I mean, however evocative you might find that beach wear model shot, it’s not really porn if they’re just standing there smiling. The rest of it is in your head. The assumptions you’re making about the combination of surf and skimpy clothing are your problem, not a legal issue. 

So if we apply the same standards to our food photography, we can quickly see that the “food porn” we all post (oh yes we do, don’t play innocent with me) fails to qualify in many ways. No mastication, rarely even any forking. Spit or swallow is never an option. The food just stands there doing it’s surf (and occasionally turf) thing, and the rest is all in our heads. 

What we have here is not food porn. These are harmless glamour shots. It’s food glam.  So that’s a thing, right? *searches* Okay, so it’s not much of a thing. Yet. But it’s going to be... #foodglam
