Every school had pride for their football team no matter how bad they suck, and my school (Champaign Central) made that quite obvious. Now being the end of the season we closed out the season at a record of 0-9. No matter how badly we were losing by someone always came out to support our team. On Friday nights when we were at home you could guarantee that the bleacher bums, students, parents, teachers, any fans, and our beloved David Ho would be in the stands. But I want to know, what happened? This was supposed to be OUR year. This was going to be the year that we dominated all the other teams and we made it to state. But clearly we did the opposite. What happened? Was it the players faults or was it the coaches faults? To me (being at nearly every game and every practice because I was the manager) I saw error in both parties. The players LOVED to screw around whenever they got the chance. This included them jumping on each other while doing "central jacks" and humping one another. They were also caught doing cartwheels while they were supposed to be doing warm ups TWO DAYS BEFORE OUR BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON. They would yell out things that had nothing to do with the warm ups and there was a conflict of authority with the seniors that were calling out what they were doing. They should have had their heads focused on football and not have been messing around so much, even in practice. This season proved the saying "You play how you practice" to be true. But I can't blame just the players. The coaches could have treated the players differently. They let all of the shenanigans go on and I only saw them punish the team TWICE the whole season and that was because they were talking, not because of anything else. But they also babied the varsity players instead of disciplining them. When They lose work them more. Yes, I understand the need of watching film and having chalk talk, but maybe they should work harder instead of taking extra time to let them hang out after these talks. Also why would you feed players and reward and praise them for losing? Every home game they got fed. I was talking to a friend and he agreed "You eat when you win/" Why should the parents make an effort to cook or pick up food (Papa John's, Little Ceasers and Meatheads) when the players wen't making an effort on the field? The coaches also shouldve listened to the players. I as talking to some of them and they had fantastic ideas, and also if you give them the opportunity to change the traditional way of football and be open to opinions they will be more engaged in practice and not fool around so much. I heard several great ideas that would have gotten the point across and would have kept up the strength and bonding of the team. They took thieir losing season as a JOKE. Things need to be changed, if not we are going to keep losing and the team won't have the same unity.
