Cosette Appreciation Week Day 3: Water
@cosette-appreciation-week
Jean Valjean knew he would always remember that day. The sun came out to shine brightly in the morning, and by nighttime there was a little child in his care. He had half a mind to buy her some things-- a pretty new dress and coat, which she much preferred to the rags she had been wearing. He bought these from a shop they passed.
Inside the shop they saw another little girl engulfed in toys and ruffles, who giggled about celebrating her birthday in that way only children could. Jean Valjean turned to Cosette.
“Do you know when your birthday is, Cosette?” he asked. Her shining eyes widened and she shook her head. Still she wasn’t speaking much. And of course she didn’t know when her birthday was. He doubted there were many celebrations in her honor at the inn of the Thenardiers.
“Well, then, we will just have to pick a day. What about today? Is it alright if today becomes your birthday, Cosette?” He smiled down at her, and she smiled meekly back, which he took for a “yes.”
Soon they were outside again and her tiny hand was clasped gently in his.
“When is your birthday?”
Jean Valjean looked down at her in wonder. A question-- a question he didn’t remember the answer to. They didn't have many celebrations in his honor at prison, and by the time he got out he'd forgotten nearly everything save for his name.
“I-- I’ve forgotten, Cosette,” he said. Best to be honest with children, as they were people too, he’d always thought. She stopped walking and pursed her lips with a decision.
“Then today should be your birthday too.”
He thought it was a wonderful idea, and from then on they always had the same birthday. As the years passed Cosette forgot the reason why. But she always treasured that day.
“Happy Birthday, papa.” she whispered on her nineteenth birthday. That year he wasn’t there to celebrate with her. But on that day, the sun came out to shine on the water of the lake.

I think it is still Cosette Week in some timezones!
I’m planning to spend most of next month inking, so I’ve been busy trying to figure out uh... exactly how to do that, so naturally Gothsette made an early appearance in this process.
✨I hear it’s Cosette week ✨
