Okay the auto tune thing really irritates me bc people don’t understand what it is and what it’s used for lol. Like it CAN and absolutely SHOULD be used for artistic purposes and not to just sell someone as a great singer when they aren’t (like sorry for the typical example, but if you listen to Katy Perry in studio vs live, it’s a whole world of difference, sometimes she sounds alright but most of the time a lottttt worse than recorded so they are definitely doing something in the studio). But like fun. in the early 2010s were messing around with it and creating new and interesting sounds like for Some Nights where they essentially made Nate Reuss’ voice in the bridge take place of where a guitar solo traditionally would be… and that’s cool and adds to the song. Can you tell its edited? Of fucking course but that’s the point. Just like with Y&M of course the sample is split and edited in the chorus, and of course in Sunshine Riptide they actually reversed the tape like Patrick isn’t going to actually be singing stuff backwards lmao.
Like I think people automatically assume autotune or editing vocals in general is compromising artistic integrity and it’s like… no??? Sometimes it’s truly there to enhance it and get an effect you wouldn’t get otherwise. Like some music isn’t MEANT for that like if FOB did an acoustic set and used autotune or editing I would raise an eyebrow but like they never have? They have no issue with stripping down their edited songs like Immortals and singing them live with guitars a bass and drums. If they DID have an issue and never did that then I could see maybe “hey why do they always rely on this effect to sound good” but like that is not the case. They are using the tools and technology at their hands to create specific sounds they want in the studio and there should be no issue. Ughhh idk it just irritates me to no end that people are like “music today sucks, no one needs talent” and like maybe it’s easier to get big without having amazing vocals but like… you can tell when it’s used to enhance something that isn’t there vs when they are using it to enhance the talent they already have and add something interesting.
Also plzzzz a lot of white dad rock from the 60s-90s their vocals actively sucked and they only got big bc of their songwriting capabilities and even then sometimes… it’s like… why were they ever huge. Anyway sorry for the rant I just get so annoyed with this debate tbh 😩 Tldr autotune/vocal editing generally isn’t always bad!
SPEAK ON IT!!! YOURE RIGHT!!!!! AUTOTUNE IS A TOOL TO BE ELEGANTLY OR BRUTISHLY WIELDED IN ART!!!!
