“WHY ARE YOUR TAGS LIKE THAT?” OR: RED GUY DUCK AND YELLOW GUY ARE THE EGO SUPEREGO AND ID TO THE ENLIGHTENED MIND, A MASTERPOST
BASICALLY: the ego, superego, and id are freudian concepts of how the mind works in psychoanalytic theory. i match up the three protagonists of don’t hug me i’m scared with these concepts. here’s my insane person, long-winded explanation as to why.
THE EGO: rational, realistic, practical. the true self, the mediator between the other two. very concerned with self-preservation.
THE SUPEREGO: idealistic, critical, perfectionist. the judge, jury, and executioner.
THE ID: impulsive, childish, emotional. pure desire. associated with sexuality and romance.
the characters have been described by joe pelling as “the middleman” “cynical and fussy” and “optimistic and idiotic” respectively
RED GUY: is CONSTANTLY the mediator between yellow and duck. the only one seen in the “real world,” and the ego is the self presented to the outside world. the “worm in his brain” has to do with outward appearance.
DUCK: famously hostile and judgmental, constantly associated with the military (authority figures), even becomes a dictator in the scrapped pilot. his aggression is often targeted towards yellow, who he deems too emotional and sensitive and deserving of it the most. the “worm in his brain” has to do with morality.
YELLOW GUY: while he is often read as asexual and aromantic (which i agree with!), he has multiple “love interests,” even if none of them are played straight. his brain friends are all very emotional and have nothing resembling a voice of reason, and no way of handling warren (who can be interpreted as an intrusive thought) without enabling him. the “worm in his brain” has to do with relationships.
MISC DYNAMIC THOUGHTS: when yellow claims “grolton is the dog,” red corrects him gently and politely and duck swiftly shuts him down and tells him to shut up (there’s a lot of instances of red gently correcting yellow and duck doing it harshly, but to my memory this is the only time they do it with the exact same thing). during the friendship fight, red implies he’s told duck to stop being so harsh on yellow. duck has to intervene to remove warren (again, here a symbol of intrusive thoughts) as yellow is physically incapable of doing so on his own.
CLOSING THOUGHTS: do i think this theory is the key to understanding what dhmis is about? not at all! i personally believe that dhmis is just made for fun and with no deeper meaning than “becky and joe made something fun to make each other laugh.” do i as a psychology enthusiast think it’s an interesting way to interpret the text? yeah. my theory is flawed, for sure- yellow is concerned with keeping harmony and is usually nonviolent despite the id’s association with aggression, duck is the least likely to go along with the teachers (authority figures, when the superego gets its moral system directly from them), red often doesn’t care about the other two, among other things, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun for me to think about!
if you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading! feel free to ask any questions and i would be very happy to answer them, as i’m very passionate about this theory and love to discuss it. love you!

Schedule
Please note that some of these dates may be subject to small changes.
June 1st: Check-in 1 Writers: 25% of the final word count. This is going to be our least strict check-in because of the short turnaround. This CAN include what was submitted during the summary submission phase. For example, if you predict you will write 10,000 words, you can submit your initial 2,000 word summary submission, with an extra 500 words written since then on top. We just want to see that some progress is being made. Artists: You have contacted your team members (or at least the writer!) and you are communicating. Beta Readers: You have been in contact with your writer to talk specifics.
July 15th: Check-in 2 Writers: 50% of the final word count. If your first check in was similar to your summary submissions, we expect more progress by this stage. We need to know that you’re on your way to writing your fic, and that you expect it to be completed by the deadline. Artists: You know what the writer is working on and you have an idea/ideas worked out for your art and you have started sketching (or other applicable pre-production process). Early Bird posting may be considered if all members of the team agree and reach out to the mods to discuss. Beta Readers: If you have not been in contact with your writer, check in with them. If you and the writer are in agreement about how you’re going to work together, and it does not require you to be in active contact with them yet, this does not apply to you. For example: if you are helping with plot and outlining, you have already been doing that, but with SPAG you still have time to just chill depending on how fast you work.
September 1st: Check-in 3 Writers: 75% of the final word count. Artists: You have made solid progress and you are aware that you have a month left to do your part of the project. Beta Readers: You are aware that you have a month to do whatever you have agreed to do for your writer! (Check SPAG, cheerlead even harder for the final stretch etc.) Note that we will ask for proof of progress for this check in! We’ll also start asking about when you can post - this will be filled out by one person, for the team.
October 15th: Posting Begins! You are done! The fic is written and ready for the masses to read! The art is ready for displaying! Fics will not be posted all at once but for the duration of the entire month. Remember that these are more guidelines than actual rules! We trust that you know your own process best and can manage your time. In the case that time management is something you struggle with, make hitting the check-in goals your objective.
Early Bird Posting Previous years have allowed for Early Bird Posting. The current mod team has no immediate plans for Early Bird Posting this year, but it may be considered according to the following criteria on a case by case basis. At this stage, you should reach out to mods directly if you wish to be considered, rather than relying on a questionnaire.
If you meet the check in 3 bench marks at check in 2, your team may be eligible for early bird posting. If an author indicates on their check in form that they are at least 75% done, they will get the option to fill in the Early Bird Form – here, you can indicate interest in posting in September or early October. September will only be available if a sufficient number of teams are ready on time! We want at least one team posting per week until October. Once we get that info, we’ll send out a questionnaire to each team that expressed interest in early bird posting, asking about your availability to post, and based on that assign you a posting week. Authors will need to post at least their first 5K during that week, artists are encouraged to post when the relevant portion of the story goes up (e.g. if you have illustrated a specific scene, it will go up when the scene is posted. If you made a cover, it goes up when the fic first posts. etc.) Authors are expected to continue posting regularly until their fic is complete, and everything should be totally up and published by the end of august! Note that if you want to do this, it will require being on top of things and very communicative with your team! All members of the team must consent to Early Bird posting!
Regular Posting If you don’t qualify for Early Bird Posting, we’ll be sending out the same sort of questionnaire after the September check in. Everything is expected to be totally published and done by end of November!
