Senpai means someone of higher standing. From my understanding of the word it mainly refers to someone older than you or someone above your grade in school, but a lot of people say "senpai" because of anime and how it's always some school girl crushing on her older classmen and say shit like "senpai notice me" so I guess here in western culture it's become more like someone who you admire. It's also become a big joke.

Connor sighed and looked up at him. “Maybe things would have been different if I would have known the truth... if I would have realized it a long time ago.” But maybe, probably, things wouldn’t be the same and she never would have gotten Mary Jane. Nothing was worth not having Mary Jane.
