//What should I write about next?
Marry Me? Pah.
Just the other night, Marry Me by Train came on the radio. I heard it once before, but just that once. Finding it familiar but not being able to put the title to the song, I asked Wil.
"It's Marry Me by Train."
"Oh. Humph."
And began my ranting.
I cannot stand recent songs about marriage. Yes, sure, the tune's pretty catchy. Yes, singer's got a great voice. Popular singers/ bands. But the lyrics. God. The lyrics just trivalise marriage so much that it infuriates me.
You don't marry someone on a whim. It's not "something dumb to do", neither is it something you have in mind the moment you see a girl in the cafe. It's fucking stupid. It's not something you "get yourself into" and when you're close enough to wanna marry someone, the feeling's definitely mutual. There's no need to question it. I don't know why people write such songs about marriage and even more so, how they are able to top the charts.
I understand if they want to put an element of fun to marriage, but do not trivalise it. It isn't about getting drunk and being spontaneous, it isn't about knowing instantly that you want to marry this pretty girl sitting at the cafe, it isn't just about owning a house and having 5 kids and a dog. It's so much more. As much as these notions are romantic and really idealistic, please. Save them for other songs.
When I first heard the titles of such songs, I was rather intrigued to see what these artistes had to sing about such a sacred bond. And looking at the lyrics, they really fell short of my expectations. In fact, I think I was quite put off/ disgusted by how marriage is portrayed.
You know what is a good song about marriage? It is one that doesn't give the listener the idea that marriage is about ticking all the items on a checklist. It is one that makes the listener overwhelmed with the endless possibilities marriage has to offer. It is one that makes people believe that love conquers all, that love is above all things. It is one that brings tears to your eyes because it is just so, so beautiful and it tries to capture the magnificence of marriage with every word. In fact, it is like a poem. Because each word and placement is well-thought of.
Alright, rant over.
