I believe pretty strongly that people cannot fundamentally change. The most we can do is work around the fringes of our being, the little stuff, the habits and the hairstyles. This new year, I won't become a more positive, optimistic person. I won't be more romantically bold. I won't be more grateful for what I have, more outgoing, more spontaneous, or more organized. A few resolutions will not change the fundamental core of my person. So this year, I'm not going to set myself up to fail. And that's fine. After all, what's wrong with focusing on the little things? Progress is still progress even if it's one millimeter forward at a time. And even if I don't come any closer to the person I wish to be, at least I will come a tiny bit closer to accepting myself, antisocial warts and all.
That said, here are my New Year's Resolutions:
1. Be on time for all of your morning classes at least one week this year. Hell, at least make it to all of your morning classes for one week.
2. Try to eat healthier. It's never going to be apple slices for lunch and salad for dinner, but at least try to avoid making pasta four times a week. Especially since you have less time to go to the gym nowadays.
3. Try to sit next a friend in your lectures even if you really don't feel like talking to anybody that day. It'll honestly make you feel better.
4. Submit your essays on time. I'm serious with this one, Diana, just fucking do it.
5. No more than 2 cigarettes a day, bonus points if you quit altogether.
6. Spend less money on clothes. In fact, just spend less money on the whole, especially when it comes to groceries. You're a student, not Jamie fucking Oliver. Next time you reach for that packet of dried porcini mushrooms, remind yourself that those 99p mushrooms on offer work just as well.
7. Go to the gym AT LEAST twice a week. I know that was a really rough patch for you, but you have to move on and get back to your normal routine. Even if working out doesn't actually make you feel better about yourself, it'll stop you from feeling extra gross.
8. Spontaneously give your number to one guy you've never spoken to this year. Yes, I realize I said I wasn't going to become more bold but this is really more of a dare. I'm daring myself to do this, because I've always imagined doing this and never worked up the guts.
9. BUY LESS COFFEE. Another one I'm really serious about. Get a cheap coffee maker and bring a mug to school, or whatever. Just figure out a system and implement it!
10. Explore London more. This might be the last year you live there.
