Eppure siamo tutti terrestri... Posted @withrepost • @iantmcallister It looks like @fisheriesoceanscan (DFO) hasn't learned a thing from its many years of mismanagement of Pacific herring. Today, DFO chose to ignore it’s own so-called precautionary approach to herring management and has gone ahead and recommended an incredible 20% harvest rate for herring in the Straight of Georgia. Fishing at this rate has caused a massive 60% decline in population levels since 2017 in the Salish Sea and total closures throughout the rest of coastal BC. As these foundational #BIGLittleFish continue to disappear, an environmental crisis is plaguing the Salish Sea, where entire ecosystems are being disrupted due to a lack of food. Even the marine tourism industry is feeling the blowback from shrinking herring populations. This fishery jeopardizes the basis of their livelihoods—an industry that generates hundreds of millions of dollars for the B.C. economy and employs thousands of people. DFO's refusal to protect our remaining herring stocks by recommending another year of unsustainable fishing completely undermines its own conservation mandate and the voices of countless people around the world that have asked DFO for a closure. It is my sincere hope that the new Fisheries Minister, @bernadettejordanmp, stands by her commitment to conservation and reconsiders this destructive fishery.
