Message from @eco_jgatto Jordan Getto @pacificwild PLEASE SHARE: Have you seen this #BIGLittleFish? 🐟👀 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Pacific herring are a small silver fish roughly 15-25cm in length (and shrinking) and weighing in around 70-200g. With a lifespan of 12-15 years, these fish are the foundation of the Pacific food web but are vanishing in many places. 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧: coastwise abundance of herring was last witnessed before the onset of industrial fishing in the late 1800s. 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬: chronic mismanagement and industrial exploitation, exacerbated by faulty science, habitat destruction, disease-spreading marine fish farms, and human-driven climate change. 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝: if herring return to high abundance, coastal ecosystems will be more resilient, economies will thrive, and the opportunity for cultural resurgence will arise.
