Not a normal day at the office today. Here’s a weird excerpt from an otherwise decent session working through some approximations of moving towards a transport trailer. Through most of the session we were able to reinforce feet moving forward, weight shifts forward or head movement in our direction. In this clip we got a duck and two unacknowledged food tosses. And yes we are in with the hippo! However you can’t see our escape paths nearby and he is an old arthritic guy more likely to go back in his pool than move in our direction due to neighboring hippos creating a fear response that require these tiny approximations. #workisanadventure #hippotraining #zooanimals #zooanimaltraining #positivereinforcement #forcefreeanimaltraining #animalwelfare
Gordo is not really fat.. just too close to film properly. Anyway this is us attempting to film working on some of the steps one might take to train a voluntary jugular blood draw from a very nice kudu. #kudu #kudutraining #zooanimals #positivereinforcement #forcefreeanimaltraining #veterinarycare #animalwelfare #hoofstock #africanantelope #antelope (at Mexico City, Mexico)
This little lady learned so much in three days. Here we are fine tuning a lay down behavior. In the next sessions we added both front legs needed to be curled in. She also started an open mouth behavior. Being in California one of their favorite reinforcers is avocado 😊🥑 #bear #beartraining #zooanimals #positivereinforcement #forcefreeanimaltraining #animalwelfare (at Orange County Zoo)
Less than 3 minutes for stress free nail trims. The Indian Rhinos showed us how incredibly fast they can learn and how agile and aware they are of their bodies. They showed us in just minutes they can learn to rest either their toe, the side or the flat part of their foot on a board depending on what we “bridge” and reinforce. This fine tuning of presentation of their feet allows for voluntary health care. Caregivers can trim nails, check for signs of arthritis as they age, and are working towards voluntary blood draws from a vein on the leg. And the rhinos just love it. It was a pleasure watching them “think” during the training session. One of the wonderful things often revealed to people who train with positive reinforcement is the animals’ potential... whether it is to problem solve, use its body in ways you may not have seen before, build relationships, share its personality and much more. Really a gift to get to know this animals more through training. @fotawildlife #rhino #rhinos #indianrhino #zooanimal #zooanimaltraining #positivereinforcement #forcefreeanimaltraining #animalwelfare (at Fota Wildlife Park)
