This video of a macaw learning to do a retrieve for the opportunity to rip up paper towels is a fan favorite. This was from a parrot training workshop I taught in Sweden. The bird was no longer interested in food and the owner was “keeping him busy” while I lectured, by letting him rip up paper towels. That simple observation was enough information to let me know we had a potential reinforcer in paper towels for this macaw. And as you can see, it worked! How many of you have parrots that enjoy being on their back ...or you have trained them to be comfy on their backs? For Blu Lu it means stress free towel time and nail trims. She is also free to get up if she chooses. But staying on her back results in desired consequences like head scratches and play. It works well for her. "It just takes practice, right?" Practical application is such a key component of many professions, especially animal training.(I definitely want a surgeon who has performed the procedure so many times the mechanics come almost automatically.) The eventual goal here is actually injection training. But the trainer needed better duration for the body position first. Can you see the body language he is looking for that lets him know the bird is considering breaking position? He is trying to build in longer gaps of time in between the delivery of reinforcers. He did get a 2 minute hold here (IG will only show 60 sec) Overtime he can work his way down to one reinforcer delivered at the completion of the hold. Been a very rewarding first few days with the team in Bogor.
