This video of a macaw learning to do a retrieve for the opportunity to rip up paper towels is a fan favorite. This was from a parrot training workshop I taught in Sweden. The bird was no longer interested in food and the owner was “keeping him busy” while I lectured, by letting him rip up paper towels. That simple observation was enough information to let me know we had a potential reinforcer in paper towels for this macaw. And as you can see, it worked!
