mae’s very dumb and very sneaky cat, max, had lately become quite the escape artist. he wasn’t supposed to be an outside cat, but he kept finding ways out of the apartment that mae couldn’t quite keep track of. he always came back, so it wasn’t too worrying, but most of the neighbors had figured out where he came from and would sometimes knock on her door to return him when he ran away. so she wasn’t too surprised when she opened her front door to find a stranger with her cat. “fucking hell, max, again?” she asked with a roll of her eyes before shifting her attention to the person holding him. “i’m so sorry, i can’t figure out how he gets out.”

                                                  some things were constants in life and for joohyun, her parents never let up about being married and having another parent for her daughter. the dad of said daughter skipped out when she learned of the pregnancy back in the day but she couldn't blame him. not really. they had been so young and he had his entire life resting out before him or so others told her. but there were moments she scorned his choice and what it left in the shambles behind. in the present timeframe, joohyun had much bigger problems because in a moment of annoyance and frustration she had blurted out being engaged to someone. whatever, right'? she could just let it go on for awhile and then announce they called it off due to limiting differences. something technical and fancy with a lot of words all over the place. things were perfectly fine until her parents announced they were coming to visit to meet the spouse to be and get to know them. cue the panic. cue the dashing around like a wild woman to make it to the other's place of work to beg, downright beg them to go along with the plan. ❝ okay, listen, i don't have a lot of time because i need to get back to the inn but . . . . i told my parents something stupid and you have no idea how they are . . . i can't just say i made it up. i need . . . damn it. i need you to pretend to be engaged to me. just from now until after the holidays then we can call it off. please. i'll owe you a huge favor. anything. absolutely anything you want i'll do it. just please. they'll be here later tonight and i need you there to greet them and before that we need to get our stories straight and . . . i know this is asking a lot but . . . . ❞
