“ so, what you’re saying is——if i’m lucky, i’ll sort of——turn out like you. ”

his eyebrows had shot up a little ways, and he stretched a hand around to massage his head——digging his tongue into his teeth after a moment.

“ well, that’s that, i mean——isn’t it, then?” 

he was staring off at ——well, not at anything, just off. his voice was dry, but there was something more to it, too, or——something less.

something almost heavy about it.

“ still——could be worse. ”

he ducked his head down a bit, then issued a sort of a sniff.

“ make it look good anyway, don’t we? yeah. ”

❝ Close your mouth, dear. We're not trapping flies. Also, just between us girls, those bottom teeth of yours could use a little TLC. ❞

It took her a second to even properly register what she’d just heard. 

“ —sorry, literally everythin’ that’s goin’ on righ’ now, an’ you’re havin’ a go at my teeth—? ” Her lips were faintly apart, and she blinked several times, frowning—almost disbelieving. 

Then she put up a hand, insistent, moving on—squeezing her eyes shut for a second—frustrated, but keeping her voice level. 

“ Y’know, I really haven’t got time for this—jus’ let me by, alright? I’m not leavin’ until I talk t’him—seriously. I mean it. ”

“ no, no, that wasn’t my——well——actually, i use it to——y’know, sometimes. ”

he swung one of his legs up and around, propping a shoe up on the console and picking his hands up off it——wiggling his fingers at her in what he very quickly realized was a seriously misguided attempt to make a point.

“ it’s just that i like to go sort of—–hands-free, occasionally. oh—–come on, that was funny. little bit funny? no? ”

he cleared his throat, then averted his eyes and let his leg drop guiltily off the console.

“ yeah, well——didn’t think so. i’ll just use my hands, then——y’know, like a normal person. ”

he rubbed at the back of his neck a bit sheepishly.

“ i mean, no problem, got very——long arms. ”

“ oh, yes, shame on me, very bad, yeah. ”

he stuck his tongue on his teeth, then lowered his head down a little, stretching a hand around after a second to rub at his chin.

“ i mean, it’s lucky i value my survival, or——well. ”

he trailed off——lifted his head up a bit, and went on massaging his jaw almost methodically as he spoke.

“ who knows what sort of a position——you’d be in——right now. ”

“ well, tell that to the draconians. ” he started, then stopped again, thinking better of the whole——well, tangent he’d been about to start on, apparently.

“ or, on second thought, don’t——don’t tell that to the draconians. ”

he jammed his tongue up against his teeth——lowered his head down a little, then thrust an accusatory digit out in her direction.

“ actually, you don’t talk to them——i mean, really, don’t, don’t even talk to them, because i think they’ve about had enough of your——whatever that was, back there. ”

he waved it around in a couple of circles.

“ i mean, at this point, you might as well just——i don’t know, admit you get off sabotaging interplanetary relations behind my back. ”

he squidged his eyes up a little as they walked——licked his lips a bit, then levered her in by the arm.

“ i mean, a heart or two, or——three i could live with, but chocolate——oh——i draw the line at chocolate. ” he lowered his head down, squinting——looking straight ahead of them.

“ seriously, though——i’m trying to hold on to these teeth. ”

he sucked at them a bit involuntarily, like——well, like he was thinking about something he hadn’t thought about in a while, and——yeah, like he would’ve rather gone on not thinking about it

“ you remember eighteen eighty-one. ”

“ oh, c’mon, don’t——don’t be like that, i’m not——! ”

he was on his back under the console. from there, he sat up, started to argue, then deflated——snapping his mouth shut.

“ okay——i am, take your point, sorry. ”

he lowered himself back down, then disappeared under the controls again——all a bit sheepishly.

“ just need the multi-quantiscope——by the way. ”

he stuck a hand back out, then stuck his tongue on the backs of his teeth——grimacing a little.

“ if you could hand me that and the——what’s it called? the astro-rectifier——yeah, i’d appreciate it. ”
