Democrats In Congress Can Sue Trump Over Constitution’s Emoluments Clause: Judge
A federal judge ruled on Friday that 200 congressional Democrats have the legal standing to sue Donald Trump.
In a 58-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan allowed the lawmakers to sue the president for allegedly flouting the Constitution’s emoluments clause, according to Reuters.
After Trump was elected president in 2016, he stepped down from running his $3 billion real estate empire while retaining his ownership interests.
The lawmakers suing Trump say that violates the Constitution’s foreign emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from receiving payments or gifts from foreign governments without Congress’s permission, according to Bloomberg.
In addition, The Washington Post notes that some of Trump’s properties benefit from investments or business from foreign governments.
For instance, Trump’s D.C. hotel has hosted leaders from Kuwait, Malaysia and other countries.
The ruling is the second decision by a federal court that allows the president to be sued, according to The Associated Press.
In July a federal judge in Maryland ruled that a similar lawsuit against Trump filed by attorneys general in Maryland and the District of Columbia could proceed. That suit covers only Trump’s earnings from his hotel in Washington.
Reuters said the members of Congress suing Trump are all Democrats, except for Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.

The House Republican’s corruption knows no bounds. They are busy rolling back regulations right and left, and are profiting in the process.
Their latest move will benefit the fat cat oil companies. The House Republicans just voted to allow energy companies to hide payments to foreign governments.
This act, called the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, said US businesses had to report any payments to foreign officials to shareholders. The Obama administration put this regulation in place to protect shareholders.
Bribery investigations cost companies, and their shareholders, a lot of money. For example, an investigation into Walmart bribes of Mexican officials cost shareholders $439 million.
Besides, bribery practices are immoral and should be illegal. Companies shouldn’t be paying foreign governments under the table anyway.
But Republicans don’t see it that way. They would rather please oil executives and screw over the shareholders.
Shareholders will end up paying the price when corporate executives break the law. This action should infuriate Wall Street and the average investor.
Every Republican who voted on this measure chose to support the repeal. The Republicans are united in their corruption.
This action by House Republicans is just the tip of the iceberg. Several other regulations are on the cutting block as well.
These regulations include rules to protect streams, to ensure fair pay and safe workplaces, and to reduce waste of natural gas during oil production on tribal lands. The Obama Administration installed these rules to protect the American public from the abuses of corporations.
But the GOP isn’t interested in protecting Americans. Large corporations have the Congressional Republicans in their pockets, and are using that influence to get that they want.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission often behaves like a watchdog with no teeth, but it has just stood up to intense pressure from big business and finally approved two rules that will shine a light on dealings between some of the world’s largest corporations and the poor countries from which they extract vast amounts of natural resources.
One of the final rules will require companies engaged in resource extraction to report on all payments to foreign governments, such as taxes, royalties, fees and presumably bribes. The other will require companies to disclose their use of certain resources originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where warring groups that have committed frequent human rights violations finance themselves through the sale of what are known as conflict minerals, which can end up being used in the production of goods ranging from jewelry to iPhones.
