Hi dear, how are you? I was wondering, as i've seen you post about V.C. Andrews and Flowers in the Attic, and that was a big influence to Gillian Flynn for Sharp Objects, have you read the books? Cause i'm aware of the films, and curious about them as well, but i haven't checked either. Would love to hear your thoughts on them! I know there's 4.
Hey! 💕 I'm doing alright, thanks for asking
I've read the first book of the series and seen both films, I'd say if you're curious about them definitely check out the book before either of the films, which try their best but don't capture the overall bleak and hopeless atmosphere of the book, and neither are entirely accurate. They both tone down the abuse portayed in the book. Presumably to make the experience more digestible.
Its really easy to see where Gyllian got her inspirations from in Flowers, so you'd probably enjoy it!!
The way it explores the complicated experience of generational trauma, the quiet but horrifying female cruelties between women in families, emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and tole this takes on a person. The way can warp someone's worldview, view of themselves and their mindset around these familial wounds is done really well.
Its also a has a great sense of isolation and being trapped with the house almost a stand in for the horrible family. In the same way a lot of gothic horrors do, or even sharp objects to an extent!
So basically just a fun and lighthearted read lol
