Once you start reading you are going to say “No not again!” but trust me just continue reading. I am going to talk about Dove once again because I personally feel like Dove is on the right track with their marketing strategies. They are producing many videos that are going viral on social media that have people talking. Majority of the things mentioned about their many campaign videos is about how it touches the audience because people can relate to these issues. The one particular video I will be mentioning is the beauty sketches produced by Dove.
To summarize the video, a forensic artist asks the first group of people to describe themselves and describe their physical facial traits. They all describe themselves negatively but the tone in the video is still warm. The artist does a sketch of each individual just by how they described themselves. Afterwards they are introduced to a new person. After they spend some time with each other, the people from group two then describe how the person they met from group one looked like. The people from group two describe only positive things about their partner in this experiment. The artists created the sketches using the details provided by the second group of people. The original people who got drawn saw the sketch of when they described themselves versus how a stranger saw them.
Here are some of the sketches:
Now you may be thinking “Why is this video or campaign gaining so much attention?” and that is because a majority of women tend to perceive themselves more differently than what others tend to perceive them. We (and I say we because I tend to do the same) push so much negativity upon ourselves. Mirrors do not lie but a person’s brain does. We assume we will be hurt by others so we convenience ourselves that we have all these flaws therefore when someone tells us something, we will act like we are not affected by it. However, in reality we are dying inside. We feel ashamed of the way we look and feel so our real beauty starts to disappear from our own perspective.
Before I continue on with my post, please remember that you are beautiful and tell yourself that you are beautiful no matter what.
Dove is fighting this by demonstrating to the people who did not realize their beauty that there is beauty to them because even strangers noticed it, why shouldn’t they? Dove did not mention any of their products once again, but this campaign connects the audience to them. Their brand is being recognized as a brand that empowers people and that does not put others down. Instead, people in social media are standing together in support of the message behind the campaign. Dove is becoming a powerful advocate in social media.
