People say that you don't live life to the fullest without falling in love. It hurts too much to be in love with someone when it's not a mutual feeling. If falling in like is bad enough and falling out of it is terrible, falling in/out of love must be torturous. I can't deal with that amount of pain myself. It must be the hardest thing. That's why many people choose to hate someone than to love them. This is just my opinion, though.
