Link had never been one to become vocal when he was angry. The youth didn’t shout, or even raise his voice very often for any given reason. There were few instances in Hero of Twilight’s life when he could remember conveying himself by way of yelling, and truthfully, Link couldn’t say that he enjoyed being loud for any real reason.
As such, his anger was often quite the opposite of that - it was silent, and even sometimes a tad bit cold, a start contrast to the warmth that the Ordonian was otherwise known for. When someone made him angry, Link often found that he didn’t want to speak with them, didn’t want to be around them, not until he’d cooled off and managed to level his head. Even then, Link was not the easiest person to make angry in the first place.
His predecessor’s actions, however, had certainly managed to slide beneath his skin this time. Perhaps it was because he’d hoped they’d gotten past thing, had somehow improved thanks to the understanding that existed between them. At the very least, Link had thought that the Hero of Time realized how his rashness could hurt both of them.
For him to pull a stunt like this though? It caused both anger and concern to mix within him, creating a mixture where Link wished that he could have suppressed the former emotion. It was a bad habit of Link’s to focus on things that weren’t the person that he was frustrated with, and in this particular moment, he thought it best to distract himself with the task of tending to his wounded companion.
Perhaps he should have acknowledged the apology being given to him at least though. Perhaps he’d been too cold. Regardless, he was not so hard that the sounds of shaking words and hitching breaths didn’t pull the younger hero from his brooding.
Something admittedly ached as stormy eyes rose slightly, catching the sight of damp lashes and obvious pain that went beyond that of the physical. Was his silence really so agonizing for the other... ?
The Hero of Twilight certainly hadn’t meant to hurt his predecessor with it, and that desperation in his companion’s voice made his heart break.
“I... I al... I al-al-al... I alm-m-most l-l... alm-m-most l-l-lost y-y-you.” This was another reason why he chose not to speak when he was upset. The impediment that made communication so difficult for him in the first place was worsened when he was emotionally compromised, making the ordeal all the more frustrating to deal with. How ridiculous he must have sounded right now, despite the severity of the topic.
“D... D-D... D-D-Do y-y... D-Do y-y-you r... r-r-reall-ly un... r-r-reall-ly und-ders-stand th-that?” Still he couldn’t look up, though Link could feel his own hands shaking now, trembling with the weight of what had nearly happened. “I al... al-m-most l... alm-m-most l-l... l-l-lost y-you, L... L-L-Link-k.”
Goddesses, when was the last time he’d been so upset over something? When Midna had left? Yes, that sounded about right. This hit him with a similar cord, and even now, memories of when she’d sent him away, teleporting him out of the throne room so that she could take Ganondorf on by herself, and act that would cost the Twilight Princess her life.
This had almost been a repeat of that, and this time, there wouldn’t have been any Light Spirits to bring the older hero back. Hands stilled but held the injured limb, even as he struggled to steady both the shaking of his voice and of his body.
“I c-c-c... I c-c-c-can’t g-go th-through th... th-that ag-g-g-gain, I c... I c-c-can’t.”
