16 yr old me on spending the first day of fall break working at mcdonalds when someone shit in a condom
Returning to your former workplace gothic
Everyone still has that glassy eyed stare and tense facial expression, looking like they’re gonna explode in a fiery rage or melt down into a puddle of tears any second now.
The tone, stuttering and wavering of their voices tell the exact opposite of whatever they’re chatting to you about. We’re not fine. Don’t ever come back. It’s not getting better. Please leave.
Nothing has changed. Was I gone a week? A month? 6 months? Years? The place still has the same amount of problems, just like when you left.
You have no responsibility here anymore. You’re not even wearing work clothes. Yet just chatting with former coworkers or bosses during their break sends that tingling down your spine; you’re slacking off. Someone’s noticing, and filing it with your superiors.
The overwhelming fear of getting disciplined, having your pay cut, or even being fired feels to real, despite the fact that you’re not even employed here anymore.
You have to puke in the nearest bathroom right after after leaving. Your mouth tastes like crematorium ashes, even though you’ve had nothing but regular coffee today.
It becomes really worrying how you keep spotting people dressed in workplace attire in the corners of your eyes for the nearest days. Especially in places where they really, really shouldn’t be.
The fact that you're counting down how many shifts you have left (really really publicly) at my old workplace, before you return to your regular store, is so stupid. Grow up and act like a fucking adult.
