Rules of family 👪 photo session #ForPhotographers ⠀ Family photography sessions can be fun, easy, and enjoyable 🌞 for everyone, including mom if you just know how to plan it! ⠀ •I LOVE photographing 📷 multigenerational and extended families! Vacations, reunions, holidays, and anniversary celebrations are special times and provide the perfect opportunity to be remembered with quality professional portraiture👍 . However, there are some very important points to prepare for. ⠀ •Some families only want a great photo 🖼 of the whole group, documenting that everyone was there and some families want to take the rare opportunity of everyone being together and use it to capture relationship images between family members 👪 – siblings, grandparents with all of the grand-kids, etc. ⠀ •Make sure that everyone is in agreement about the style of the family photo session. Some people love traditional 🏯, perfectly lit and posed studio photography and some people prefer casual, outdoor portraits that are a little more relaxed 🙏 . It’s important to know if someone will be unhappy if their hair is blowing a little on the beach, or if they will be uncomfortable sitting on the ground. ⠀ •Location is crucial to a good portrait because of the lighting 🌤. Often I am asked to shoot on location at a special place “in front of the garden” or at a lakefront home or in a hotel 🏠 where everyone is staying. Time of day is especially important because of the position of the sun. We need to discuss specific locations prior to the session so that I can be adequately prepared with lighting equipment if needed💡. ⠀ What’s the absolute best way to get a great session experience for you and get the best work done? How to Photograph Children 🧒🏻 #ForPhotographers ⠀ Photographing 📷 children can be a joyful and rewarding process, but it’s also uniquely challenging. Whether you’re looking to launch a career in portraiture or just want to capture moments with your own family, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to photographing kids 👶 — so I want to share advices with you. ⠀ 1. Shoot them as they are (not how you want them to be) ⠀ The beauty of shooting children is capturing them as they are, and the best shots are often impromptu 🍭. Adults tend to project what they want you to believe they are. Children are always honest and are comfortable with themselves. They lack that self-consciousness we seem to develop as adults 🧑 👩. ⠀ 2. Get down on their level ⠀ It sounds obvious 👀, but remember that you’re likely to be much taller than your subjects. Don’t spend all your time looking down on them: When photographing adults you have to be very careful about how you pose them. With children, you just want to get a genuine expression or a warm 🤗 moment, so you can get as low to the ground as possible to create an image that feels more connected with the child. ⠀ 3. Avoid clothing with very strong patterns /stripes ⠀ You don’t shoot for a children’s fashion magazine. Clothing should not compete for attention with your child 👚. The eyes should be drawn to the child, not the clothing. Solid colors 🎨 work best but subdued patterns would do the job just as well. On the same note, logos should be discreet not overpowering. Or even better, no logos at all! Shiny, sparkly ✨, or reflective fabric not only distracts, but can also create the illusion that you’re larger than you are. The same is true for busy patterns and bold designs like stripes, polka dots, and plaid. ⠀ Powerful child portraits are much different from “look at the camera and smile” pictures. How to shoot LGBTIQ couples 🏳️🌈#ForPhotographers ⠀ Same-sex wedding photography — most traditional poses in wedding photography were designed with a man and woman in mind and don't always work for same-sex couples 💕. The photo book aims to help photographers and couples find their own solutions for tweaking the classics by taking into account factors like physicality, composition and relationship dynamics. ⠀ Anyone who's ever scanned a wedding album or set of engagement photos knows the standard poses: The dip. The kiss 💋. Back to chest, prom-style. Forehead to forehead, anyone? ⠀ Most of those poses have been around for a long time and are based on the idea that there's a man and a woman involved. The placement of a hand 🤝 or positioning of the groom contains assumptions about physicality and gender roles that often don't apply to same-sex couples or even nontraditional straight couples. ⠀ Creating contrast between two white dresses can be difficult, so consider a sash or belt to break up the washed-out palette. The same goes for distinguishing two tuxedos 🤵🏻 or suits: use accessories to make the look not the same. ⠀ Photographing people is all about timing, light and emotion. Lighting 💡 must be just right, emotions must be flying, and timing is most critical; the shutter has to be fired at just the right moment, and that means anticipation, too. ⠀ I’d say lighting, composition and perfect exposure are all important. However, when I have those three, and I press the shutter 📸 just when I see a genuine moment between people, knowing it will later evoke an emotion, that’s when I feel like I’ve got a good shot. ⠀ The single biggest mistake a photographer can make when working with a same-sex couple is to assign male and female gender roles. And this is where your skills as an observer come into play. If you’ve never photographed a same-sex couple, you should practice. Easy and awesome portrait lightning setups you can shoot with a single light 💡#ForPhotographers ⠀ Learning studio lighting can be overwhelming, but with help, it can become much easier to grasp. Read on as I explore four different portrait lighting setups you can easily pull off using just minimal equipment ⚙️. ⠀ 🦋Paramount Paramount is commonly used on females in portraiture because it conveys beauty and gives an overall glow to the face. It offers minimal shadows and accentuates the subject’s cheek bones. To achieve Paramount (or, butterfly) lighting, place the key light above the subject’s face, aiming down at a forty-five degree angle. ⠀ 🖼Rembrandt Rembrandt lighting derived from the dutch painter, who used this lighting pattern in a majority of his paintings. The pattern is noticeable when there is an inverted triangle of light in the shadows. The key light should be at a 45-degree angle away from the subject while also being two feet above eye level. Be wary because the higher the light, the smaller the triangle will become. ⠀ 📸Split Split lighting takes Rembrandt light a step further in locating the light 90 degrees off access to the camera. This is another instance where the refinement might be a reflective card on the dark side to reveal detail in the face or positioned further back to light the hair, to separate the subject from the background. ⠀ ➰Loop The shadow from the nose 👃 will extend to the far end of the cheek, closing the shadow to represent it as one overall shadow. A loop lighting pattern can be achieved by having the key light slightly to the side of the subject, and then lifted above their eye 👀 level, angled down towards their head. ⠀ I’d love to hear about when and why you prefer a specific lighting pattern 🌟 over another. Almost all couples agree for a session before the wedding, so engagement photography has pretty much become a staple of wedding photography. Regardless of how you like to approach it, understanding the basics of photographing couples and knowing how to coordinate a shoot that involves more than one person is crucial 🗝. ⠀ •Engagement Shoots should always follow the KISS 💋principle — Keep It Simple — particularly when it comes to posing. Basic wedding photographer poses always help to get the best shots and help the session to flow smoothly. Pick poses that you know in advance will be flattering and comfortable to the couple 💑 👩❤️👩 👨❤️👨. ⠀ •Since this is usually your first time working with the couple, be sure to be extra clear with posing instructions and engage in lighthearted banter. Engagement shoots can be great practice sessions before the wedding day. It also helps to establish trust 🤗 in advance. ⠀ •Posing may be simple, but the shooting angles 📐 do not have to be. Make sure to always get your “safe shot” in a pose, then look for different angles before you move the couple. Think very close up and very far away for more variation. When you have a variety of angles to shoot from, your portfolio becomes more diverse, helping you attract ideal clients when you share the images 🙂. ⠀ •Because you are showcasing two people in love and committing their lives to each other, kissing, hugging, and holding hands 🤝 are all appropriate during the engagement shoot 📷, and will make great moments.
