Hange watched from a distance as the young soldiers explored the new town, flocking towards a stand selling a sweetened cold substance in a cone that had them gasping with delight. It warmed the commander's heart, seeing these brave kids being able to enjoy something considered mundane by the rest of the town's standards.

"You'd think I'd be happier knowing there's an entire world still out there, beyond the walls." Hange sighed, feeling some what sobered by the sadness of it all. Their earlier enthusiasm for seeing a motor vehicle steadily dropping into frustration. "The Survey Corps. were always looked down upon for wasting tax payers money, and there were always corrupt people in charge, but at least we were in it together. The last of humanity. Now: we've found an even greater enemy, we're drastically behind in technological advancements, and we can't seem to find anyone willing to trade with us."

There were many people in this brave new world who hated them for the mere crime of existing. Many more who wanted them dead. They needed allies if they were going to survive.

"I never wish to go back to being ignorant, but I feel like I'm way in over my head. Levi, what would Erwin have done differently in my boots?" They asked the shorter man. Since the loss of the commander and Moblit, Levi was the only one left among their comrades Hange could be vulnerable around.

All things considered, Hange survived the battle of Shiganshina with nothing more than a scrape. Unlike Moblit who got caught in the blast zone of the Colossal Titan trying to protect his Squad Captain. Unlike Erwin who sacrificed himself and his entire unit just so humanity could uncover a history that had been stolen from them. The loss of one eye was hardly worth crying over when they had lost so much already. Hange would gladly sacrifice their other eye if it meant bringing back their fallen commander. Erwin must have been mad to make Hange his successor when it was their short-sightedness and hot temper that allowed Reiner to escape.

A gentle brush of fingertips on their face brought Hange back to the present. Turning to the left so the dark-haired man was now in their peripheral vision, Hange looked into Levi’s ever squinting eyes before glancing down at the pink stained bandages clenched in his other hand.

The wound on Hange’s face took time to heal, with them having to change the bandages once a day to avoid infection. Both of them knew Hange was shit at taking care of their own wellbeing without Moblt around, so Hange appreciated Levi bothering them each morning to make sure the wound was properly flushed out and fresh bandages were applied.

"Good thing beauty is only skin deep, right?” Hange laughed, the sound feeling hollow and empty as it reverberated off the stone walls. The blood had faded with time, the stitches were removed, and all that remained was a patch of white jagged scar tissue around the now empty eye socket.

Hange had yet to pick up the hand mirror on the bedside table and inspect the damage for themselves. Instead, they were more fascinated by Levi’s subtle reactions as he continued to trace the outline of their damaged face. A constant reminder of what they lost that day.

“Guess you’ll have to come up with a new nickname for me.” Hange joked, forcing a smile that did not reach their eye. “Shitty two eyes doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.”

The two were lying in bed, enjoying a brief moment of rest. There was no brigade for Levi to lead into battle at sunrise and no stacks of paperwork awaiting Hange on their desk first thing in the morning. Moments like these were rare between the two with their ever-increasing list of responsibilities, so they basked in the afterglow of a relaxing hot bath and the smell of clean bedsheets, entangled in each other’s arms as their naked bodies cooled in the chill night arm.

The long-haired brunette was lying on top of their much shorter companion, arms wrapped around his middle as they rubbed their cheek onto the bare chest, still damp from just recently towelling off. Tracing an elegant finger down the length of their partner’s sternum, Hange stopped at the seventh rib, right before the ribcage separated and just above the well-defined abdominal muscles. Leaning closer, Hange placed a soft kiss on the centre of their partner’s chest where a noticeable ridge bulged out of his front.

“Coincidentally, did you know the lower part of the sternum is called the xiphoid process?” Hange asked, lifting their head up to look Levi in the eye. “It’s the smallest bone in the sternum and separation of the xiphoid can puncture the diaphragm and liver. It’s most common in chest trauma when someone performs incorrect chest compressions.”

Hange dropped their head back on Levi’s chest with a heavy flop, wrapped their arms tighter around his lithe middle, and kissed the tiny ridge again. Cute.
