An Amazing Day

No other way to describe it. Today was incredible fun and I’m still wiping the smile off my face.

I was invited to be a part of The Festival Of Steve (@festivalofsteve) in Melbourne and that included getting a shoe shine from Fortis Green and then a beard trim at Men’s Biz, who are both exhibitors are the upcoming festival. I was a little hesitant at first since I actually like shining all my shoes myself and I trim my own beard but boy, was I in for a surprise!

First stop was the Fortis Green (@fortisgreenapparel ) shoeshine stand in Collins Square where I relaxed with a coffee while Ray gave my brogues a great polish. In the photo of my shoe (taken in the morning), you will be able to see that while most of the shoe looks polished, there are still some scuff marks. The shoeshine refreshed everything and they look great now although I might put a little more shine on the caps. I only wish the weather had been light enough for me to take the ‘after’ picture of my shoes. I have some very nice shoes and I’m hesitant about who I let near them (partly why I shine my own shoes) BUT I would have no hesitation is getting a shine here.

After the shine, it was onto Mens Biz (@mensbiz) for a beard trim. My friends all get their grooming supplies from here so I’d heard of the place and been there but never actually experienced the service till now. As you can see in the photo, it’s an old school barber experience and I put myself in the very capable hands of Brian. As he was cutting, he showed me where to cut the lines and what grades to go to on the different parts of my beard. This is great because it helps me to maintain it for myself at home. What I can’t get at home is the experience of laying back in a barber’s chair with a steaming hot towel on my face and letting someone else do all the work. Truth be told, though, the experience has spoiled me for beard maintenance any other way.

The Festival Of Steve takes place on Saturday, 3 June, but I’m ready now!

For such a special day, I had to wear a special outfit. The tie fabric looks like donegal tweed but is actually silk. The vest fabric looks like glenplaid tweed but is actually linen.The suit, however, is a glorious green donegal tweed (Caccioppoli fabric and made by P Johnson). I’m also wearing a pair of Over The Cuff socks by Berg & Berg. The look is inspired by a photo of Alan See from The Armoury.
