Fossil Magic – Correspondences/Uses
This post is specific to fossils. PLEASE do not use any dried, living, or unethically/illegally sourced creatures or fossils in your magic!
Some of these may not be available for sale, or only available as replicas.
A fossil is the preserved remains, impression, or trace of a once-living thing from a past geological age.
Many of these animals are extinct and their essence cannot be evoked in any other way. However, some, like sea urchins and sand dollars, still live, so why use them as fossils? This allows us to use their energy and magic without harming any living things in the process, and in my opinion, because fossils are so old, they hold an energy and power that cannot be found in newer specimens. Using fossils also connects us to that long ago past.
(If you’re on mobile, be warned: this post is long!)

Flowers – Beauty and glamour magic, purification, mystery, love magic, courage, peace, spirit work.
Dinosaurs – There are far too many types of dinosaurs to list them all here and each would have their own associations. However, as a whole, the monolith of the Dinosaur looms large in the collective human consciousness. They represent strength, power, sovereignty, wildness, and mystery. They are often used in popular media to explore our deepest fears, explore curiosity, and stretch imagination.

Crystals, Minerals, & Stones:
Amber – Actually fossilized tree sap, amber is good for memory, stasis, clarity, slow-moving magic, healing, and connecting to the sun. Some amber also contains inclusions of insects, plants, fungi, and occasionally small animal parts. Included ambers will have additional associations based on what is trapped inside.
Septarian – This stone is formed from three different minerals: calcite, aragonite, and the concretions of organic material. It formed when ancient oceans receded. This stone is highly connected to the ocean and has a deep connection to the ancient past. It is an excellent grounding stone, and can also be used for creativity, calm, wisdom, and easing sadness.
Stromatolites – These are layered structures of sediment which are important for the fossil record. Magical uses include: memory, study aid, binding, knowledge, aid in making servitors (anchor).
Tracks – Anchoring, finding objects, storing energy, direction, journeys, travel, finding oneself, past lives, astral travel.
Burrows – Glamours, home, comfort, hidden objects, healing.
Coprolites (fossil feces) – Curses, hexes, baneful magic. Fertility, letting go, cutting through bullshit.
*Inorganic objects, markings, or impressions that may be mistaken for fossils.
Dendrites – These are stones which appear to contain fossilized plant material, but are actually fractal crystallization patterns. Growth, calming anxiety, mental fortitude, stress relief.
Moss agate – These are white to clear chalcedony with included minerals that give the impression of moss. Despite this impression, they do not contain preserved remains of moss. It represents new beginnings, opens your eyes to beauty, and can be used for grounding and attracted wealth.
Kidney ore – These can appear to be trace fossils, such as burrows, but are actually a variety of hematite. They can be used for positive thinking, grounding, protection, warding, courage, balance emotions, and cleansing negativity.
Concretions –Mineral precipitation that has formed in sedimentary rock or soil in the spaces between particles, becoming hard, compacted masses of matter. Basically, these are one of a variety of minerals that long ago worked their way into the cracks and crevices of stone or soil; once the surrounding material is gone, they form odd shapes. Sometimes called “fairy stones.”
