#1851: it was initially thought that the Clovis people were the first people to enter North America, full stop, but a lot of different evidence now says otherwise.
for one, the actual time period of when the Clovis era was around has been moved drastically just this century - about 500 years more recently is now the most widely-accepted daterange (11,050yBP). then again, this number keeps changing, and there are lots of different hypotheses (the "short chronology" and "long chronology" differ wildly: the difference between 200 years of Clovis and 1,500 years) so this could well be outdated info.
in any case, as i was reading about about a month ago (see the digest AB), there were people in Florida long before Clovis, possibly 3,000 years before.
