Dear Sky, een fascinerende fotoboek van Nederlands fotograaf Arthur Mebius over vliegen met Noord-Korea’s enige vliegmaatschappij Air Koryo.

Arthur Mebius (NL) is zijn leven lang gefascineerd door vliegtuigen. Op zoek naar een nieuw foto-project ontdekte hij dat er in Noord Korea vliegtuigen uit de jaren 50, 60 en 70, nog steeds vliegen.

Air Koryo is de nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij van Noord-Korea. Internationale sancties en milieubeperkingen hebben het aantal internationale bestemmingen van deze maatschappij drastisch beperkt tot China en Vladivostok. De oude Antonov’s, Ilyushin’s en Tupolev’s vliegen nog zelden over de grens, en lijken daarom overbodig. Desalniettemin staan deze vliegtuigen en hun crew klaar voor vertrek. De binnenlandse vluchten die af en toe plaatsvinden zijn daarom des te belangrijk voor de piloten en stewardessen om te oefenen en hun kennis en vaardigheden op peil te houden.

Arthur Mebius kijkt naar de geroutineerde handelingen van de crew, die lijken op een ingestudeerd toneelstuk over onderhoud, controle en procedure. Een prachtige dans waar een gevoel van toewijding en trots uit opstijgt.

Het beeldverhaal is verrijkt met op historische gebeurtenissen gebaseerde fictieve anekdotes, archiefmateriaal, en technische informatie over de huidige Noord-Koreaanse vloot.

my sketchbook is finished! i love the part of the process where it stops being just a stack of paper and starts being a book. i’ve never made anything with a hard cover before but it really elevates it to another level. i think my favorite thing about it is that it’s entirely made from materials and scraps i had lying around already :)

it has three sections with 160g paper, one that alternates between tracing paper and 120g dotted paper and then one that alternates between 120g dotted and graph paper, i printed the graph and dotted paper myself because the paper i had was waaay too thin and got ripped immediately by the thread when i tried to bind it. for the covers i wove coloured paper i had lying around and some of my favorite tea boxes and glued that onto thick cardboard, which was actually just the backing to a spiral-bound paper block that i carefully cut in half. then i glued the covers to the first and last page. i had meant to glue some fabric around the spine before glueing on the covers but forgot to bring that while i was finishing and decided to just leave it out, maybe next time! only thing i would consider adding still is an elastic band to also protect it from breaking as the covers are a bit heavy and my last sketchbook the binding snapped in one place and i had to use a bunch of tape to keep it from falling apart further.

started making a new sketchbook yesterday but got distracted with making a pretty coverr. good use for my one billion tea boxes.
