Coming Soon: Volver Viernes
Because sometimes your little novelita about historical lesbians just hands you a writing assignment you cannot turn down. Especially when you sometimes mention these things to inveterate enablers like @mrsdaphnefielding and @anandabrat, and when @bloomsberries starts tagging inspirational photos from Annemarie Heinrich...
Fina may not know anything about what world she is stepping into when her plane lands in Ezeiza in the fall of 1959, but that moment in Argentina's history is such a magnificent setting for a budding photographer and working class lesbian to find her way in the world. So, I will be presenting to you (soon, I promise) a fix it, taking episode 400 or so as its canon divergent cut off. If we are lucky, AB will return to the show before I finish. Either way, I will be busy for the next several months finding a path for Fina and Marta to be together cross the Atlantic.
Why Volver? We know from SDL that Isidro is a Carlos Gardel fan.
The most famous voice to spread Argentine tango across the world, the French-Argentine Gardel was an international star when he released this song in 1934 and died shortly thereafter in a plane crash. In a city where nearly half the population was born outside Argentina in the early years of the twentieth century, this song of exile and longing for return spoke to so many young people. We might also imagine a younger Isidro listening on a crackling radio with Adela and a baby Fina in the waning days of the Second Spanish republic
In later years, queer women in Buenos Aires sometimes called butch lesbians--you know the type, the kind that causes trouble in a dapper suit and doesn't call in the morning--gardelit@s. Little Gardels. So it had to be done.
Stay tuned for more footnotes in advance on the cultural world of mid century Buenos Aires, and FotógraFina across the Atlantic
The fact that nobody is calling her FotograFina is preposterous to me. May I introduce you to FotograFina Valero and her wife MHarta de la Reina.
