Find A Song about the unending documentation of our own lives
Organised Scum - Fotograph
Organised Scum are one of the UKs most enigmatic new bands, thanks to their near-absence from social media and their sonically-misleading name. They have flown under the radar for a few years, gradually honing a style of skewed art-pop-punk which borrows from a wide spectrum of different genres.
Their latest single 'Fotograph' sees them delve into a dark r'n'b groove, fusing a big dancefloor- friendly bassline with the usual blend of angular guitar work, psychedelic flourishes and smart vocal hooks. The result is a bit like Hall & Oates's 'I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)' being thrown into a blender with Public Image Ltd – a neat mixture of pop savvy and the het up, smirking social commentary common to most of Organised Scum's work to date.
Explaining the song's theme and lyrical approach, lead singer Tom Duggins said:
“Fotograph is about the unending documentation of our own lives. The self-surveillance that we all take part in. It's also about the pure saturation of image in the world today. Because we buy products online before we've seen them IRL, and people use dating apps to decide whether or not to give someone the time of day on the basis of a static photo - it's almost as if the photo precedes everything else. The constant exchange of images becomes its own separate reality - one which seems more sanitary and risk-free than real life, but you don't have to look far to see the casualties. Whether it's a rise in eating disorders or a general negative impact on people's mental health - this supposedly fun thing is fucked up in all sorts of dire ways.”
Organised Scum are Tom Duggins (Vocals, Guitar), Tom Williams (Bass) and Sean Canty (Drums). ‘Fotograph’ was recorded at Blank Studios, Newcastle and mixed by John Martindale (of the band ‘SHIELDS’) and is being released via independent label Kaleidoscope. (press release)
