Four finger fury!
One of the most impractical yet fun to use and abuse techniques out there is the four finger technique. This is using the groupings of either 1,2,3, and 4 (index, middle, ring, and pinkie fingers) or T,3,2, and 1 (thumb, ring, middle and pinkie finger). Like with the three finger technique, you have more fingers to throw out for a busy single string line and use less stress on your playing hand. However, it becomes unbearably complicated when you start to use these fingers for more complex string skipping patterns.
Instances where it makes total sense to use four fingers are on songs like "Parallel Universe" from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the end of a song when people are just going absolutely bonkers and hitting everything and anything that they can, a disco bass line, and a tremolo passage. Instances where it does NOT make sense to use four fingers are not limited to the instances listed below:
Playing pretty much anything and everything by Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Between the Buried and Me, and just about any other prog-like band you can list.
Jazz
Arpeggios
The complete discography of Sigur Ros
String skips
Country Music
Funk
and the list can go on and on.
It's all about practicality. Utilize these multi-fingered approaches like I do (I'll post a video showcasing these techniques soon). But Don't under any circumstance utilize these techniques if you are going to play all of these sloppily just to prove that you can say "I use three fingers" or "I use four fingers". Use your head. You are the rhythmic and harmonic foundation of this band. And by being such an important piece, you have to play cleanly and precisely. Less is more when playing the bass, and it's painfully true with your plucking hand.
