Okay for all the hate Thingol gets and the jokes about him and his (admittedly questionable decisions) he loved Lúthien and Túrin.
I'm sure we've all seen Lúthien's story, but not so much Túrin. I've recently started rereading the Silmarillion and I've come across this quote:
"[A]nd Thingol spoke to Beleg, saying: 'I grieve, Cúthalion; for I took Húrin's son as my son, and so he shall remain, unless Húrin himself should return out of the shadows to claim his own. I would not have any say that Túrin was driven forth unjustly into the wild, and gladly would I welcome him back; for I loved him well.'"
And it makes me sad now that Túrin never returned to Doriath in his life. Beleg found him and told him that he had been pardoned, but despite being able to return he never did.
Túrin was eight when he came to Doriath and remained there for nine years. He was 17 when he left! Seventeen years old! And from that point on he never sees his father, biological or fostered, again.
And it hurts that they never got to meet again, Thingol and Túrin. How long did Thingol wait in hope that perhaps one day Túrin would return. Was he aware of where Túrin went, did he learn of his death or was it many years after the event.
"For I loved him well" is going to haunt my thoughts now, a father and son, though not in blood. Who never reconciled.
