Aunt Rían and little Túrin on the way home from the market (definitely NOT featuring any cake that Morwen said he shouldn’t have before dinner)
There he drew forth his sword, that now alone remained to him of all his possessions, and he said: ‘Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee. From no blood wilt thou shrink. Wilt thou therefore take Túrin Turambar, wilt thou slay me swiftly?’ And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer: ‘Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.’ Then Túrin set the hilts upon the ground, and cast himself upon the point of Gurthang, and the black blade took his life.
more tolkien guys: maeglin, fëanor, túrin, & fingon
Thinking about that line in Valaquenta about how Varda can hear those crying out in the dark places Melkor made, and about Maedhros crying out upon Thangorodrim when he hears the host of Fingolfin and of Finduilas crying out with Túrin being unable to hear him, and the sons of Fëanor in the older drafts hearing the murder of their grandfather but being helpless to stop it and Húrin cursed to see and hear everything
Is it worse to scream into the void hearing only bloodstained echoes or be trapped unable to respond? Or like so many others, to simply never know at all
Hail Gurthang, iron of death!
A dragon is riding a trolley at full speed. You are in charge of the lever which controls the tracks. If you pull the lever, it will kill your sister. If you don't pull the lever, it will kill your wife. What do you do?
